To begin with, I should say that bf1942 has to be the best FPS ever, where replayability is concerned: the game drops you into a huge map based on real-world locations where you can do pretty much anything you like...and best of all, you don't need a particularly high-end system to play it (though it does help).
A few things about Road to Rome:
The new immobile artillery pieces can be used by anybody to lay suppressing fire within the gun's field of vision.
This is good because it forces players to take fire support into account. The thing is, by just appearing in their pre-set locations (and reappearing there shortly after being destroyed), they give defenders an unfair advantage (i.e. as long as you can hold the point, the gun will reappear and you can use it again).
Another 'improvement' is that the AI is much more effective at using artillery (e.g. Priest, Wespe).
You'd think this would be a good thing. It's not. You'll find that you're being hit by shells no matter where you are (i.e. beyond visual range). The reason why this happens is because, as in so many other games, the AI functions according to coordinates, not visuals (i.e. like you do). Combine this with the fact that the AI will blatantly cherry-pick (e.g. will frequently ignore enemy units nearby just to be able to fire upon you), and you will be fragged continuously without ever being able to see your enemy.
The new Italian levels are not as great as reviews made them out to be. Theyre all either too small (i.e. too little to do), too short (i.e. points are lost to quickly after taking enemy bases), to dark (when battling the omniscient AI, this can be fatal) or too simple (i.e. not enough to do).
For example, Operation Husky (Allied landings in Italy) is very similar to the Omaha Beach level in that you will have trouble playing because of the hyper-accurate artillery. Im pretty good with the MG and can usually take out a wave of bots coming at me from 200 yards no sweat (until one of them snipes me that is). I played OH as the Italians and had a fun time initially blasting away at Allied Infantry as they make the beach head or, even more fun, as they paradrop and using the turret near the beach (similar to OB level) to take out tanks. But, just as Im feeling good about myself for taking on 20 bots in a matter of seconds BOOM, and Im waiting to respawn. The Cruiser offshore (beyond visual range because of the fog which BTW also prevents you from effectively firing back using the turret) will hassle me to no end crouching does definitely wont help you here, trust me. Ive even been hit at a quarter of a mile away with pinpoint accuracy!
Now, it may sound like this is not a good game at all but let me assure you this is the best FPS you can get in terms of its universality (better than Operation: Flashpoint, if not as realistic). And also note that this game is particularly popular because of MP, not SP gameplay. It just needs some work where SP is concerned IMO.
