Battleship Vs Missile cruiser

Once you got missile cruisers in Civ 4 battleships became completely useless. However, since battleships can bombard areas and don't consume the same resources as missile cruisers is it still worth keeping them and possibly making them even after you can make missile cruisers?

I remember missile cruisers not being able to defend, but this might have been patched. You would upgrade them all and send them off with a few other ships, that would get decimated. It became a habit for me to leave them alone and I liked them so I'm not sure if it was.

ezwip, are you sure you aren't talking about the stealth destroyers? Because they were stealth, a stack would often get wiped out while they sat there invisible.

actually, I like battleships. I never have much use for oil, whereas I can use all the aluminum I can find, and they've got great ranged strength for city bombardment. Stick a sub or two with them for ship sinking (if the AI's bothering) and just use them to pound the hell out of costal cities.
