Benefits of Open Borders?

Do Open Borders agreements offer anything other than passage through territory? I feel like I remember there being another bonus in Civ 5, something like increased trade or culture expansion. Is there any reason to accept an Open Borders agreement in BE beyond just wanting to make it through an AI's territory?

No, that's not what Open Borders gave you in Civ V BNW.
They instead gave you a tourism percentage bonus.

Prior to BNW, there was no benefit to open borders and so I suspect that's the case with BE.

"Open borders" is actually part of the "cooperation agreement" which as I can see should eventually lead to an Alliance. At the very least, it will make the AI faction friendlier, but may upset another faction.

It requires some thought whether to agree or not. One thing I don't like is that when the offer comes, you are not able to check the map or diplomatic screen to see if it is in your interest to accept.

Open borders is not part of a coop agreement. You can buy or sell open borders. You can't buy or sell coop. Also, you can make alliances without ever giving AI open borders. You don't get a diplo penalty for having open boarders with enemies. You could potentially have open borders with every1 and it doesn't make a difference to the AI.

There doesn't seem to be any penalty so I usually agree to open borders. The way I see it, I can't really keep the AIs from sending colonists where I don't want them to without using military force in the early game. Since they don' seem to pop cities in "my" territories I don't have a problem.

In BE, does other players military units still block your civilian units from passing thru like it does in Civ V? If so, that would be a very good reason to keep the borders closed in BE. :old: In addition, if you don't want the AI clearing aliens nests within your territory you need to keep the borders closed as well.

Good points, I've just never had to worry about it so far. Usually the AI only sends explorers snooping around at the early game and its well after I've leared all the goodies. Besides, saying no wouldn't stop them....I don't control enough territory to block them.

:agree:

This.

I had an "open border" deal with my neighbour ARC which was "Purity" while I was "Harmony". It kept sending units through my territory destroying the nests I had carefully nurtured and killing Aliens within my borders!!

ISTR that in BNW, Open Borders added a Tourism multiplier so you grew your Influence on another civ faster. In CBE, nothing like Tourism, so no benefit there.

I don't particularly like opening my borders because it seems the AI inevitably sends a Colonist through -- using your roads and magrails to get to the far border faster -- and then sets up an Outpost close to that border, That's effectively cutting you off from your own "backyard"where you had been planning to expand into eventually.

Also I had a civ use open borders to attack a station I was trading with (the one with tons of culture). Fortunately, it was an inept attack, and when they moved away (to get out of miasma to heal up) I blocked them with my units, and then refused to renew open borders with anyone.

In one game I covered a big choke point and didn't give my AI neighbours open borders. So, they had to trade with me ;) (as I didn't give them the chance to explorer other cities)

I think when the AI is asking, they got some interest. Open borders are usually the first step which leads to a coorperation agreement with them. But they're by no means mandatory. I still ended up with a CA even with closed borders in that particular game I mentioned before.

Usually it's this way: when I want to block the AI from getting somewhere, I won't accept the open borders treaty. In most cases it doesn't hurt me and they seem to like me a tad more when I accept, tho.

Usually, I use "open border-talks" to say:

- I don't care with you being around - lets become friends

or

- shove off - leave me alone/you're too close
