Doesn't the Iroquois get the GA too soon?

No earlier than Rome, really. You typically want to wait until you've built up a good force of mounted warriors before you attack. At 30 shields each, that will be a while in the ancient era. By then you should have quite a few cities. You may still be in Despotism, but most of the time my citizens are working mined grass or irrigated plains. That means most of them do benefit from the GA. GA timing for Iroquois is not optimal, but it's hardly terrible.

And the UU is just kick-ass awesome and very affordable. When the world is defending at 2 in towns and you're attacking at 3 with retreat, life is good.

And if that wasn't enough, both Agricultural and Commercial - crazy growth, more productive cities, and a commerce bonus in cities.

I find Germany to work best for me, Militarist and Scientific, but that's because I prefere to play on Emperor and Domination victory. The Panzer UU is just too cool, to boot!
