I'm sure this has already been discussed, but if so I'm also sure i'm not the only one who missed the previous discussion. Who does everyone think the best Civ is? My vote goes to the Persians, because they are industrious and scientific. I think Industrious is essential - your workers clear land faster and you might build improvements faster; I'm not sure. That faster road/railroad/irrigation/clearing really makes a difference in development. In a way I like the fact that every civ has different attributes, but in another way I don't, because once I find what attributes I like, I don't want to play civs that don't have it. There are several civs I've never used, because their attributes don't go with my style of play. Oh, and expansionistic has to be the most useless one I've ever seen. all it gives you is one scout. Yeah, that's almost as good as quicker workers or increased science.

Just as a footnote; I have wondered the exact same thing... so I decided that I would play every civ with the same conditions to which I scored the best with. So far I have only finished with Romans (space 1864, 1889 pts) and well, I think this might take some time ...

I always play a random civilization with random AI players and I have found that your starting point is much more important than any UU or other attributes your tribe might have. If you get stuck on a small island or deep in the tundra it makes the game much harder to win. Likewise if you get a nice grassland with rivers, cows and wheat around your starting point your chances of winning are increased.

I like religious civs with an early UU (Aztec, Iroquois, Babylon) to get a good start. Sometimes that early UU will trigger a very early Golden Age which has some advantages (better start) and some disadvantages (feudal or industrial could be better times to speed things up at a critical time).

With a religious Civ you can build cheaper/faster happiness city improvements like temples. You also have only a one turn anarchy when you switch government types. So it has some long lasting benefits.

I've read posts by players who think expansionist ROCKS, so I've played a few games as Iroquois (who are also religious - I hate anarchy). I don't think I have made the most of it, but I have to say it can be a good trait.

IF you are on a decent size land mass with other civs, and you crank out a couple more scouts, then you will pop the goody huts first, get settlers as a goody more often, find the luxuries first and meet the other civs first.

More goody huts = tech lead. More settlers = fast expansion zeroing in on the best luxury / resource locations. Meeting other civs means getting their techs first and brokering contact between civs. Plus, you have the best, most valuable, world map. These are pretty good early game advantages that can catapult you in front of the other civs.

Discovering that I like expansionist has made me want to try out the other traits even more.

Any map size standard or smaller I pick the Japanese. Their UU brings a golden age at just the right time. On larger maps you might want to get away from military and go with something else but religious is always worthwhile.

germans
I think the germans are the best because they are scientific amd militaristic, Militaristic is very important for a warmonger like me because units become " elite "faster and barracks come with a 50% discount in their price.

But I believe that in the near future I will change to the Babilonians they offer many advantages

I like the Persians...Immortals is a great UU early on in the game that allows you to assert early dominance with an excellent attack rating.

I already post this on another thread ...

Well, in a map bigger than small or tiny :

America is my second option- first is China.
Industrious is a very effective "civ skill" in early moments of the game, when you have only 2-3 workers - and even after this - it's very nice to have a modern empire with full of irigations, mines, etc.

And expansionist isn't so bad - 1 or 2 free techs from huts in the begining of the game is extremely useful - esspecialy on Deity level.

And F-15 units - very bad, but here is a enormous advantadge - you don't receive "Golden Age" in the first turns when is almost useless !!

But IMHO opinion Chian rules because of Militaristic - very usefull for getting leaders for rushing wonders - and their Raiders came exactly when is needed ( in my style of play ) to knock down 2 or even 3 civs with are in front of me and because are fast in many times I was able to double my empire using them !!!

Regards,

P.S. : For small maps I prefer anyway the Iroquois - for a fast effective attack-unit like the Mounted Warriors. :goodjob:

Religious and Militaristic and also have a free scout. With Aztex you learn that a Warrior is the strongest unit and not Modern Armor.
