I don't think any of the civs are so much better or worse than average that you won't be able to succeed with one.
You should play a game and think about your play-style and what you enjoyed doing most: and then find a civilization that focuses on it.
There are many types of civs and multiple ways to play some of them.
I'd recommend looking through what each of the unique attributes of the civilizations do to find what fits you.
Don't forget to read the what the uniques beyond the unique abilities do: for some civs they are just as or more important than their unique ability.
My personal favorites are Byzantium for adaptability and a religion heavy game, Spain for the thrill of exploring and holding distant lands, and the Netherlands because I like their powerful tile-specific unique improvement.
