I already have my mouse, speakers, monitor and keyboard. I just need the cpu/tower thing. Except I am limited to $1000 CAD, and I'm not sure if I can change that, though I MIGHT be able to get $1100, MAYBE.. Basicaly I want idealy 1 gig of ram, but I could settle for 512 or 750. A 120 gig hard drive but I'll settle for less (atleast an 80). SOmething better than an integrated sound card preferably but still cheap. I have a 2.2ghz processor currently and I would like like a 2.8 or something... I've been considering the nvidia 6600 gt as it isn't too expensive. THat's really all I know about. Help in easy to understand english is apreciated.

... is the $1000 for just the CPU, or for everything (CPU, mobo, memory, gfx, HDD)?

CPU only for $925 CAD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103544

-or-

Full system:

Asus A8N-E $130 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813131530

Athlon64 3500+ (Venice core) $235 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103533

1GB DDR400 RAM $91 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145440

GF6800GT $333 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130215

120GB HDD $87 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822144414

You didn't mention it, but you're also going to need a power supply... $112 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817103924

Total $988

Edit:

I forgot a soundcard.. that would be a Creative Audigy 2 Value for $58 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16829102179
Which would bump the total to $1046, but you can shave that down without much trouble.

*hugs speedo* Thank you. Except you forgot a case... and it would be silly, "Ok, everythings together, let's turn it on, *...*, oh, we forgot the power..." :crazyeye:
Ok, I'll bookmark these pages in a new folder, and yeah. Thanks!

To shave it - just fit a lower value CPU. Say a 3200 rather than a 3500. But do make sure it is an ATHLON64 and has the right number of pins (939 for that motherboard). It will take an X2 (dual core processor) later on when they get to more sensible prices.

Speedo has recommended a very nice graphics cards with that setup - you could save a little more fitting a 6600GT. Won't make a huge difference to Civ4, but fast moving games like Call of Duty will much prefer the 6800GT.

Where Speedo went a little overboard was recommending a Creative soundcard to go with it - the onboard sound (built into the motherboard) should handle Civ 4 fine.

More on the motherboard here;-

EDIT: If you want to compare a list of socket 939 processors to juggle things just right, click the next link;-

My that's a big URL

EDIT EDIT: Oh, a link for a 6600GT. This is the same manufacturer's version of that card, over $100 cheaper;-

Ok, those are bookmakred now, I'll do some more work on this tomorrow or later tonight.

Oh, and I am running COD on a 512 ram and FX52000, it works fine enough, with lag, mostly on multiplayer + 4 min load times.

So, I just order these from a site + get a store to assemble them? What about the case, cd burner/dvd reader drive and the XP software? Won't those add to the cost?
And jsut to check will my dell monitor, current speakers, and keyboard be compatiable? (I boguht a new mouse a while a go so it should have no probs as still have the software for it).

newegg doesn't ship to canada. They do plan to open newegg.ca sometime in the future through.

Yes they will. But OEM XP Home + SP2 can be had pretty cheap, and you could get away with just using one DVD-RW drive. Personally I like to fit a DVD-ROM as well - use that for most tasks like installing software and running games, and just save the burner for actually burning disks.

Yes they will work fine.

Don't you have a dell or something like that? So you can't use that copy of windows, unfortunately. XP Home OEM will run about $90 US, IIRC, probably less if you look around some.

What kind of optical drive do you have in your current comp? If it's good enough for your purposes, you can transfer it to the new PC, unless you're still planning on using the old one.

Btw if you're going to have someone assemble it for you, I would talk to them *before* you order anything... Hopefully they won't try to rip you on the assembly cost.

What's an optical drive?
ANd what about using e-bay stores?
Just an example: http://cgi.ebay.ca/HIGH-END-AMD-DUA...24923457QQcategoryZ114192QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I have decided on a nvidia 6800 gt, most hopefully.
Also, I do not care about dvd writer. as lnog as it can burn cd, read cd + dvd I am fine.
Also, I am thinkng I mgiht be able to push it up to 1100, 1200 if there is no other choice.

ALso, do not reply to this: BUt I am insulted by those who for sale a good midranged comp with a cruddy gfx card.

correct me if im wrong, but an optical drive is a drive that reads optically, like a cd writer or such.

I wouldnt mind that system, but I wouldnt need the neon krap, and u still will need an Operating system. ( Windows XP, Linux.)

Im not big on using ebay stores. I think they really jack up the prices in "handling" charges. Be VERY careful.

It's a lie! I don't endorse any graphics cards! ;)

Good. Basically comperable to the GF6600GT, I think.

search google for the product, and look for the reviews...thats the best way to find out how good/bad something is

Ok, so it is like the GF6600GT for sure?
No, the X700 is more comparable to the plain 6600. It's the X700pro and X800GT which are around the level of the 6600GT. If possible you should aim for the 6600GT or X800GT as they give a fair bit more performance for only a little bit more money.

Bah, screw this. *gras sledgehammer and chases after certain human life* "Die you incompetent confusion frustration creators!"
Ok, I am getting frustrated today after more fruitless searching, I know what I want, well, the basics, mostly. But keeping withing the sutpid limit of 1100 is IMPOSSIABLE.
