What was the best live musical performance that you have ever seen? What set this apart form the competition.
My top contenders are a Paul McCartney concert in 93, because it was big, and I was young, and it was the first real one I had been to; a Screaming Jets concert in 99, which ROCKED and was overall a brilliant, cheap, all-round entertaining night, and I had a perfect view of the stage; and the winner, the 2001 Bob Dylan concert, which was terrific.
Dylan rocked on, played all his old stuff, and had an extended encore of over an hour (or maybe that was just the second half of the show), and even talked at the end, if only to introduce his band. Add the fact I had a great view and evil binoculars, and the venue really suited the sound.
So my vote go's to Dylan.

I saw McCartney in that time frame, and yes he was very good. "Live and Let Die" is what I remember the most, for the shock value of explosions.

I've seen both Fleetwood Mac and Moody Blues a number of times, and they were always good.

The Who was the loudest.
ELO was one of the most beautiful.
J. Geils may have had the most fun.

Saw Eric Clapton for first time last month, and it was naturally great.

I'm going to say Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, because it was the very first concert I saw.

I've never been to a concert........don't plan on going to any either. I'd rather sit in comfort and hear the studio stuff.

Great view with binoculars? That's entertainment?

I wouldn't even consider going to a concert in which I could atleast see everyone on the stage clearly.....

Ahhh drake, I try to make it to TT the Bears or the Middle East in Central Square in Cambridge several times a year to see the local talent. I don't see the corporate bands tho, only the local nobody's, that's where its really at. (exception - Henry Rollins, who although a 'big' name, is far from corporate).

Best performance? - the King's of Nuthin', (May - 2000) where the lead singer removed his TEETH before starting to sing - it was wild - they played punk/swing or something and very loudly.

Just saw U2 and Clapton last week, and both were excellent.

Saw lots of great bands over the years, too many to remember, but some of the best were:

Queen
AC/DC
Stones
Van Halen (With Diamond dave only

)
and one of my all time favs,

Did I hear someone ask "Worst" ?

Unfortunately, that would have to be, gawd I hate this, Sly and The Family Stone.
THey came out, did a couple of songs, and Sly says "We suck tonight. We won't waste your time. Next time it'll be on us".
uh huh

I've seen a lot of big name international performers in concert that were great, but I prefer a more intimate environment to see live music such as a pub or a club. Melbourne used to have a huge local live music scene (still pretty big) and seeing bands such as Midnight Oil, angels, INXS, and AC/DC at close quarters in a pub before they hit the big time was great.

Some of the best gigs I saw involved standing packed in (a pub) like sardines and moving as one with the whole crowd and afterwards going out into the night air, with steam rising off me, and wringing all the sweat out my shirt.

Pantera back in Feb this year at the Mesa Amphitheater. It was the 4th time that I'd seen them (July 17th at America West Arena will be the fifth), and I was expecting somewhat of a let down for a couple of reasons, one the last show that I'd seen wasn't that great (I thought that they'd lost it) and two, it was at an outdoor venue. I was wrong, it turned out to be the best show I've ever seen. For anyone who likes heavy metal, Pantera is a must see.

Peter Gabriel was one of my favorites of all time. He concentrates so much on the artistry and presentation. His 15 minute presentation of "In Your Eyes" was just outstanding.

Bruce Springsteen for just the sheer energy. See him in NY or NJ like I've been able to do and you end up with close to a 6-hour show.

Saw 10,000 Maniacs in a very small, relaxed forum (a large bar in essence). The music and the atmosphere were both great. Same deal with Tori Amos.

Seeing groups live is a great litmus test I use to judge how good they are. I can't stand "studio bands" that have to rely on electronics and echo to sound decent.

Any "worst live concerts" out there? I saw the Cranberries and thought they were just awful live.

Uh, Brad, the question was bands we've seen. If we haven't been there, we can't say. Apparently none have gone to an Aerosmith concert, okay?

I saw Boston at the NYS Fair in 97, I think it was. They have a fantastic live show. Most of their music is meant to be heard live, and you really feel it. The entire crowd, not just me, was hoarse for days after that concert. Boston Rocks!!

I will go on record though, as saying that Weird Al puts on a really excellent show, that mixes great live performances, a flat-screen projection of bits from his numerous TV and movie appearances, and at least 9 changes of costume, including the 'Fat' suit. Probably the best thing you can do in three hours...

There was a TOOL/NIN joint concert that was a religious experience for me. Damn I love those two.

I went to see a brazilian singer in oct 2000, called Bebel Gilberto. She sings Bossa Nova and is quite sexy. The show was very intimate. Small location, acoustic instruments. So intimate that she showed us her breast !
In fact, she had this light summer dress and was dancing away to the msic when suddenly one of the strings of her dress slipped off her shoulder and revealed her bra-less breasts.

She was a trifle embarrassed but continued singing. A night to remember !

All this is true
