Seems music discussions are all the rage these days, so I've got a pretty simple question. What are your favorite cover songs? Rock, blues, techno, metal, polka - any genre! Let's hear 'em!

Some of mine -

"Sympathy for the Devil" - Jane's Addiction - Just a killer song done by a killer band. The guitars will floor you.

"Enter Sandman" - Apocalyptica - It's done with electric violins or something. It's hardcore.

"Summertime" - Janis Joplin - Of all the immortal singers to do this amazing song - her version is my favorite. You can cut the soul with a knife. Find a live version if you can.

Knocking on Heaven's Door by G&R

"Monster Mash" by the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band

Metallica's version of "Astronomy". Killer.

They also did a killer cover of "Dancing in the Streets".

Help - Noel Gallagher
Live and let Die - Guns n' Roses
Hang on Sloopy - Die toten Hosen

Song cover? Is that when one remakes a song?

Jimi Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower

He took a great song and just owned it. Its his, forever.
Amen. The opening riff is my all time favorite. His version of Rock me Baby is special too.

From the same period Otis Reddings Try a Little Tenderness, I've Been Loving You. No one did Sam Cooke like Otis.

In the late 70s the Avengers did a punk rock version of "Paint it Black" that is just incredible.

I'm dating myself here but I also have to mention the Flying Lizards goofy deadpan synth pop cover of James Brown's "Money", I think it was a top ten hit.

Ugh, covers blow. Sing your own songs. It's plagirism. I've seen "tribute" albums that plunder the "best" of artists. I've seen a techno tribute to Radiohead (sucked) and a punk tribute to Weezer, that one was the nut shot. It covered a lot of ****ty songs of there's (green album), and it was done poorly, i hate covers. Most of course. John Meyer does a cover of Radiohead's Kid A, a mos unexpected cover

Most covers suck for the reasons you have given but with a good cover a song can be totally transformed and a band can make it truely their own.

SNA? Speaking of covers and Radiohead, i was on a lyrics page and found that they did a cover of my all-time favorite song, Oasis', wonderwall, unfortunately it was more of a bash of the song:(I was torn between my long time favorite band Oasis and the ultimate Radiohead. I have to admit Radiohead is better, Oasis sure has put out some trash.

Ah, i listened to the Elephant album tonight at a Borders store (you can preview cd's and listen to the first minute of a track), the songs seemed pretty familiar. Especially the beginning to the first track, what's up with that?
