I've been a Civ player since II, and, the sad part of my experience is that I have never played an online game.

What's the best way to find some online players? The online game search shows barely any games with little or no organization.

So how do you find games?

Not too be off-topic but you'll prolly have a better time getting into multi player with Civ4 BTS.
Going on gamespy you'll usually find someone who wants to play w/o too much trouble. There is the usual online gaming stuff going on (some people way too harsh with newcomers, racist trolling in the lobby, etc.) but you can ignore that and find some good games. I haven't seen much in the way of multiplayer for Civ5 myself and the few I've talked to that have done it say that 5 doesn't really translate all that well to multi.

In fact it's the opposite. There is much more players in mp for civ5 than it was for civ4(even before civ5 came out). You approximatively have 5-6 huge servers among the world and a couple of popular private lobby chat rooms like civplayers and nq who can gather over 50 players per room in busy days.

I played civ4 multi from 2006 to 2010 and this game never reached the amount of mp players as it is presently for civ5. When civ4 had 120-130 players at best into his unique and huge lobby you can have 20-25 rooms with over 20 players for each room scattered around the world. That's over 500 players. And it's probably only the top of the iceberg since there is probably even more games running privately between friends and such.

Private chat rooms provide the best and balanced games compared to public games.

I remember civ3 ccc with like 16 "clans" with each like 10 players competing and civ4 ccc with like 10+ clans with also 10 each.

And these guys been just the top of the chain, still community been lot tighter by then and overall no of players might really be bigger in civ5.

So if u looked for lot challenging games vs good players u were more lucky in civ3+civ4 while civ5 offers more of nooby games filled with quitters

All because they went to steam's regional servers and 'broke' the universal lobby. :(

Back on topic. First of all welcome to mp:)

I would have to agree with Tommy, while there are more "online" players, actual true MP players in Civ5 is far less than Civ3 and Civ4. And unfortunately the Civ5 MP experience is substandard, the MP code is flaky and not having a universal lobby was a huge mistake, regardless if it was a limitation of steam or a design decision. We have done the best we can under the circumstances but you can only do so much with so little to build with :-/ This is why this forum is filled with PBEM/GMR games, and not requests to setup real time MP games, PBEM works much better than real time MP sadly.

But if you are looking for a good MP game you are welcome to come check out Civplayers, we offer a ranking system and friendly games to all MPers.

Cheers CS

We feel your pain, CS. Maybe civ 6, huh? I won't hold my breath.

In my experience there is usually a game forming in the lobby. Usually, half the players try gimmicky strategies based around wonders and not getting rushed, and they leave if anything bad happens. That said, the other 1-2 players might be good competition. It's fun and worth playing but don't expect too much.

I've also played some duels, and a 3v3 (props to sativa for invite), that were very challenging and quite fun. Basically, you need to find the good, reliable players and run games with them (without gimmicky quitters).

Third, you will find that multiplayer in general is much more brutal than single player. Generally, if your unit is vulnerable, it will die. People may double move, by shift clicking or moving near the end of the turn timer, then moving a 2nd time before you can react. Try not to lose workers, settlers, great people, or cities to this. Also, combat is kinda a clickfest of ranged attackers. Make sure you have enough of them to win this clickfest ;)

Overall, I enjoy it, but it's not very well done.
