Best way to win

Domination

1) Meet everyone

2) Kill them one by one

3) Play each other off while you're killing them.

I think domination is technically the "best" as you can do it faster and get more points (since all the cities you take count towards your score).

My favourite (when I remember to do so, which isn't often) is turn them all off except domination and time, with no real plans to win by domination.

For me, science, diplo and cultural victory tend to fall very close to each other usually, although science seems to be my most common victory. So these are the best victory conditions for me (also since I prefer peaceful play).

Domination is something I've only done on low difficulties. I find it quite hard (not in the sense of difficult, but rather time consuming...it just takes ages to move many units around each turn). But since I haven't done domination on my usual difficulty level (prince), I can't say how they compare in play time. For the other victories I usually need 3-4h.

I don't think I've won time once yet since I started with Civ 5. Its probably the best "stand the test of time" victory you can get, but it just takes too long for my taste to get there :)

Agreed. Conan says it best in song form on Robot Chicken

"Crush your enemies, crush your enemies, and see them driven before youuu."

Which way do you guys think is the best way to win Diplomacy, Science, Domination, Cultural or time?

Personally, I'd rank them as:

#1 Science (Usually fastest of the peaceful victory types)
#2 Cultural
#3 Diplomacy (Very easy to cheesy win; plus actually the slowest peaceful victory type other than time)
#4 Domination
#5 Time (The slowest way to win by far)

Science seems to be the one that I get most often. I just had my first cultural victory on king, I could have had a scientific or diplomatic victory in that one no problem. 35k+ gold, all techs researched... Spent the last 40 turns or so just building research in my cities and kicking the crap out of whichever AI was going after my city states (Mongolia). Cultural victory just got really dull.

The best kind of Science Vic is the one where a few turns before you launch your last spaceship parts, you give the runaway neighbor the nuclear finger to show him just how outmatched he is and if possible, take his irradiated capital for good measure.

I like your style smallfish.
I figure this is a a wargame and the most fun part is the war part. So it's domination for me. followed by cultural with a bit of war thrown in. followed by science with a bit of war thrown in. followed by, well, the others are a bit too dull other than for getting the steam achievement.

Domination is just to tedious for me, but everyone has their own style of play. :)

I try to win by science or culture. I never actually "try" to win by diplomacy, but if someone other civ builds the United Nations, and I'm not ready for my usual path yet, then I'll buy up as many city states on that last turn before the vote and win. But I don't like to win that way, and I've been known to just start another game when someone builds the United Nations. If I've got a lot of cash on me, the outcome is inevitable so I just don't bother.

I don't know about "best".

My favorite victory type is cultural, but i tend to go science usually.

I have nothing against war, but going for total domination takes soooo long comparatively to anything else.

I've been trying to vary my playstyle a bit lately, but generally I go down the military/science route, conquer a couple of neighbours and then just win scientifically as I can never be bothered with full-on domination.

yeah domination is slow. I prefer empire building over conquering.

I still go science victory. It's a holdover from my Civ2 days. I've always felt like that was the best victory in Civ games, and the one the designers expect you to go for. Especially in Civ2 (which only had Space and Conquest victories I believe). I have no idea why thy renamed it Science instead of space victory, however. Space seems to make more sense...

Now if only we could get some victory movies...

Cultural is the best becasue the game is called Civilization. War is uncivilized.

This is how it is for me too. In the beginning of the game I really have no clue what type of victory I will have, I just play and try to be adaptable throughout the entire game. Even though I don't know what victory I will have, I try to build science buildings/wonders as fast as I can becasue I feel that helps me with everything. I don't like constant warfare. I like peaceful play, with a few big and decisive wars. Later in the game I decide what victory to go for, and since I have been focusing on science most of the game my units are always up to date if not ahead of the AI so it's easy to win domination or science.

I agree I worded it wrong. My FAVORITE way to win is cultural. Although I find myself winning through Domination a lot.
