In the modern area, it should be possible to build bridges/tunnels between continents (but only over coast tiles). Maybe only 1 tile bridges could be allowed, and they should be made expensive.

Then the connected continents should count as one, if you think of the effects of Pyramids, JS Bach etc.

how would they be built....

In the modern age tunnels would be the only realistic option to span such a distance. No bridge would ever survive. 1 coastal tile, max.

They could be built by workers standing on the shore. When told to build a tunnel a tile-picker similar to the bombard command would allow you to pick which coastal tile to build on.

Still, this isn't like building a railroad, though. This should require the construction of a small wonder and robotics technology to pull off. IMHO, this would happen too late in a game to be useful.

the game would need to be made longer (in techs, and units) for thus to be useful, so late in the game ot would come...

You're right, Xen. And, making the end game last longer, would be a point, which I would be very happy about.
If you play a game without UN or space race victory, you might be happy about bridges/tunnels ( and it would not be unrealistic)

Could this be a "Chunnel" small wonder? How would it be implemented? It would have to be like the Iron Works, only avaliable on the condition that there is city beside the 1 tile gap that you want to build a tunnel across. That city would be the only city that could build the Small Wonder.

Yeah, but you would get the AI building them all along the side of their coast.

If that problem is fixed then it's a great idea!

A century ago a railroad was build through the Florida Keys and in the present day there is a collection of causeways connecting them. Of course, I doubt this would equal 1 coastal square.

I think bridges across rivers should be something that you have to specifically build and not just get by default when you build a road in the two squares on either side of the river. That way bridges would become strategically important. The taking and holding (or destroying if you are the retreating army) of bridges has played an important role in warfare throughout history. If you are invading the enemy's territory, then taking his bridges before he can destroy them would be vitally important in you war plans.
