I've got the typical "black terrain" and "eyes/mouth leaderhead" problem, but I can't seem to find anybody who has an answer as how to fix it.

Some folks seem to say it's a problem with ATI graphics cards, but my card is a VIA/S3G Unichrome, so that's not it either.

Anybody know what to do?

It sounds like your video card doesn't have enough shaders.

And I'm rather embarrassed to admit that I'm actually dorky enough to know the answer to that.

How does one go about fixing such an issue?

You might need a new card. IIRC, they're called Vertex Shaders, and pretty much any newer card with more than 64 MB has them. (ATI or Nvidia cards, anyway.) You also need a card that supports DirectX 9. I didn't look up the specs on your card so I'm not completely sure, but you might want to look at its' capabilities and specs to see if you need a new one.

Hope that helps. :)
