Blid-01- A ring to rule them all

frankcor, you ain't going to get the save for a little while as England are playing a game in the World Cup at the moment and I would put a lot of money on sooooo being sitting in front of a TV watching it right now.

- Asoka still hasn't researched Steampower, and infantry comes with Assembly line(8000), but we must act as quick as possible and it is a big big gamble, Asoka and Hatsheput are very very close with each other, why shouldn't Asoka not ask Hatsheput very friendly to help him if we attack him? He also has money and techs to persuade her.
Don't forget Sparta needs 3 or 4 cannons to attack Kolhapur(=inbetween city of Asoka). If we can take Asoka 's coast city's without Hatsheput interfering than there's hope again.

True, we have time to build up our cannons until infantry. I think it will be more of a risk not to take him on now than to wait until later. In my opinion, war success in civ4 is all about the siege units. When the tech you need gets researched (constuction, steel, artillery), they are usually always the best attackers at the time. 6 cats are better at taking cities than 6 axes, but when the AI gets longbows you really need some macemen. Similiarly with cannons, we need to strike while they still have good odds against rifles before the AI gets marines and infantry.

Frankor: Sorry, when I wished Blid good luck I had forgot you were UP next. I think your turns will be quite easy, which will be good to ease you into the game. All you have to do is select "cannon" when Sid asks you what you want to build. Then when they are built move them towards a purple border. Many of the infra builds (courthouses, universities etc) can be switched out and delayed until after the war. Right now we need cannons and we need them quickly. Don't be afraid to use the whip.

RE: hatty. It would be good to send a significant portion of our troops (probably the new ones) to the south of the ring. That way, if hatty declares (which I doubt, she is pleased with us and will probably say to Asoka that we can't betray our close friends) we are prepared. If not, which I think is more likely, we can move our troops through hatty's lands and fight a two-pronged attack.

I played 20 tentative turns. I realize I'm not certain what to do. I end up moving newly built military units towards Ollantaytambo assuming Asoka is our next target but did divert some toward our southern ring because of Asoka's city there. I've started moving workers to our core cities (near Paris) as they run out of work to do. I built Canons mostly but started building Riflemen (and some infrastructure) at the end. We can build cavalry now.

Nicolaus Copernicus (Great Scientist) born in Sorbonne
I debate with myself what to do with Nic. He can provide us 1851 beakers (or roughly 3 turns) for Scientific Method, or build an Academy, presumably in Paris. I figure with an additional 56 beakers/turn in Paris, it will take around 33 turns at 100% research to break even with cashing him in right now. I've been alternating between 100% and 0% research to maximize our beakers and gold, roughly 1 turn at 0% followed by 2 turns at 100%. So by my math, it'll take fewer than 50 turns to break even and I presume we'll still be around and running bureauracracy in 50 turns. So I go for the Academy.

Turn 12 (1685 AD)
Lyons begins: Confucian Temple
Tours begins: Barracks
Paris finishes: Academy Paris goes from 190 to 246 beakers/turn @ 100%
Machu Picchu grows: 10

Tours grows: 11
Rheims grows: 7

Turn 17 (1710 AD)
Paris begins: Rifleman
Tabriz begins: Rifleman
Orleans grows: 11
Ollantaytambo finishes: Cannon
Tabriz's borders expand makes another forest available to work in Tabriz. Two workers on their way to lumbermill it.

IBT: Asoka builds Statue of Liberty in Madras.

Turn 18 (1715 AD)
Ollantaytambo begins: Rifleman
Tours finishes: Barracks
Libyan finishes: Courthouse

IBT:
Buddhism has spread: Orleans

Turn 19 (1720 AD)
Tours begins: Library
Libyan begins: Rifleman
Tech learned: Military Tradition
Sparta grows: 13

Turn 20 (1725 AD)
Research begun: Economics

I picked Economics as Military Tradition came in but no beakers have been committed to it yet -- change it as you see fit.

We're only about 7 turns away from a Great Merchant in Paris if we assign a merchant specialist there after it grows to size 13 in 3 turns.

We're currently running +483 gold/turn at 0% research and -211 gold/turn at 100% research meaning we can average about 70% research.

Should we go for naval power (Astronomy)? -- seems like we have plenty of catapults to upgrade to canons but frigates can move a lot faster on coastal cities.

Or Railroad so we can react quickly? Mansa is a huge threat and most of our core cities are lightly defended.

Or Assembly line? -- I'm guessing it's about 30 turns away.

What are our strategic goals now? Shut down research and upgrade our obsolete veteran units (although a GM Trade Mission might fund a massive upgrade of our power curve)? We can revolt to Nationhood and draft an army of Riflemen in a few turns. Then grab Asoka's coastal cities?

Francor, you were supposed to play only 10 turns. Further we agreed to take Asoka's rifles with grenadiers and cannons, and we were making a great scientist in Sorbonne, how about him? Didn't look in the save yet.
Blid what you're gonna do now ? :(

I'm back, but i've been long away from this game so i think it's best if i just quit this one if you all dont mind.

just got back from a week end trip and need time to catch up
I will try to check this up tomorrow

@frankcor : I'd probably play from the first save. I haven't read your report yet but replaying turns is kinda of cheating :)

fair enough acid, things did went quickly here

Well, after france game where I almost fell asleep, I loaded the save. Shrug, this is nasty
Asoka has rocketry and we don't have scientific method yet, nor astronomy
When did this guy got all these techs :crazyeye: . This huy is organized and has a small empire, but I guess he's getting a huge income from the mahabodi in Dlehi. Buddhism is so popular
On the bright side , we have a decent reseach pace and can get steam power->railroad in about 20 turns

Asoka is chasing space techs, so maybe we can afford to research them then attack when we have machine gun to defend
But honestly, I prefer to attack now. I am not used to run wars with outdated units, but this is the time to try

Here is my plan, tell me what you think :

- Do some intelligence in the north

- Hire a merchant in capital to accelerate the great merchant. Trade mission to Thebes (if he can't help with a tech we want now)

- Save money to upgrade cats in the north to cannons

- regroup in the south near Kolhapur (there is no stack there to take the city)

- Attack north and south when the army near Kohapur is ready

- Aggressive defense : attack SOD with combat promoted cannons

- Bribe MM if he wants to. I am willing to pay the price

- I will try to convert MM to free religion then take buddhism. If Hatty is friendly, she will agree to trade techs again and that will be very beneficial for us

Research wise :
steam power->railroad. IMO, those have good trading value.
MM already has economics so there is no point in researching it. Astro can wait, I prefer to keep the colossus effect at least till we turn into free market

I'm no big fan of cavs and find them of little use apart from pillaging as they can't even take down rifles but if someone can tell of a good use for them I will build some

I will probably play to get my head handed back to me tomorrow
Now's time for football again :)

I vote we attack now. There's no chance of us ever out-teching Asoka. By the time we have Infantry, he'll have Mech. Inf and he, Hatty and Mansa will be finishing their space ships.

In other words, this is as good as it gets.

Do any of your lurkers have a better idea?

I just destroyed Asoka in my sologame so i know it's possible :D ATTACK:goodjob: ( when typing 'ATTACK', Kaka scoors for Brazil, this is a good sign....)

Yes, let's attack now. Do some recon and see if you can work out where he would be producing the most and hit there. Take out his production so he can't build his (advanced) units and hurt us back.

And I agree to get Mansa in if possible. Cannons to hurt his retalitory stacks will be necessary and our forces moving forward are likely to be hit in the same way.

Turn 0 :

Last time I played, I did some recon to attack HC. Now it's time to do the same with Asoka. Well, not exactly the same as sam infantry are a bit harder than longbows :eek:

Start to regroup cannons against Kolhapur south

From last world map dealt, Asoka got no great production powerhouse. He has a galore of cottages everywhere

Turn 1 :
Rheims finishes theatre and starts bank
Lyons : cannon->cannon

There are artillery in Bombay. Man, this is gonna be harsh

Asoka has a frigate. We can say goodbye to our clam

Turn 2 :

Marseilles : forge->courthouse
Paris : rifle->rifle
Orleans : rifle->cannon

MM got nationalism. He will give economics for military tradition but he will probably use it to trade with Asoka. No, no, no.

Turn 3 :

Zzzzzz

Turn 4 :

Macchu picchu : lib->uni
Tabriz : rifle->cannon

Troops positioned. Ready to attack next turn

Turn 5 :

Sparta finishes Ironworks and starts rifle. This city, once railroaded will churn units like nobody's business

Ningh hsia finishes grocer. It has decent prod. It must get in the war effort. Start cannon

Ollantaytambo : rifle->rifle

I demand money from Asoka. He claims India grandeur and sends me home.

01-AsokaRefuseDemands.jpg

Well, I take it very badly and declare war.
I also call our dear ally to help.

03-WarAlly.jpg

I revolt to free market and theocracy. The second mainly so I can adopt buddhism later, though the xp points are nice too.

I could have given him Steel, but I rather see him suffer big losses against Asoka. I expect we will too.
Our first wave of attackers is composed of
The northern stack :

05-NorthernStack.jpg

The southern stack :

06-SouthernStack.jpg

IBT : Asoka rifle appears in the south to pillage. I send a grenadier to defend.
The frigate showed south too

Turn 6 :
I send a worker into Hatty lands to see if Asoka will attack from there

Kolhapur is poorly defended.

07-KolhapurDefense.jpg

bombard 60%->12%. Troops north advance. Consolidating defense in Ollantaytambo

IBT : seafood pillaged
A knight shows north.
Asoka rifle won't attack grenadier and uncovers himself on bare tile

Turn 7 :

Greandier kills the lonely rifle on bare tile

bombard kokhapur to 0%
cannon 1 wins against rifle at 10% chance :) He gains 5 xp I think and goes from 4 to 9
cannon 2 looses against SAM infantry and do some damage
cannon 3 looses against rifle with no damage (snif)
Greny 1 looses againt SAM and do damage
Greny 2 looses against SAM at 64%
Greny 3 wins against SAM at 75%

At this moment I realize there are two MM knights near Kolhapur that can play jackal on me. This can turn nasty. Stop the attack (there are wounded rifle and SAM infantry in city) and I only have one greny left to attack
That was close. I stopped playin' adv7 cuz I got fooled this way. It is really frustrating

I convert to buddhism to try and get Hatty friendly.

Hatty and Asoka already have steam power

IBT : artillery attacks us cross river and dies at the hands of a guerilla greny. Colateral damage is not very big
MM asks for silk against fur. I say yes

Turn 8 :
Start the bombardment at Lahore and split troops. Bombing is not pelalized by river, attacking is. I keep enough cannons on left side to drop defense to 0 on the next turn

08-NorthAttackers-1.jpg

Mansa knights close to Kolhapur were intent on pillaging. Damn them. When I was hoping they will help to drop the defenders health
Cannon attacks at 48% against rifle and wins
Greny attacks SAM inf at 35% and dies
Cannon attacks SAM inf at 99% and wins

10-KolhapurFalls.jpg

Kolhapur is ours. Delete 2 workers

Hatty got Steel. I trade with MM for Scientific method

11-TradingSteel.jpg

IBT : Artillery attacks the stack left on the hill west of Lahore and kill the greny and musketeer. Only one artillery dies

Turn 9 :

Lyons : cannon->cannon
Libyan : rifle->cannon

Attack of Lahore :
Finish bombarding to 0%
First CRIII cannon looses at >70% chance against rifle
Cannon 2 wins at 69% against rifle
Cannon 3 withdrawas against SAM
Cannon 4 wins against SAM at 65%
Cannon 5 wins against Rifle at 99%. And we got another step in the ring

12-LahoreFalls.jpg

I kill the 2 remaining artillery without losses. A withdrawing cannon, then rifle + mace finish the job

Hatty and Asoka are running emancipation. This will start to hurt badly soon

Turn 10 :
Fish got pillaged too. Our poor empire is facing unrest and unhealthiness.
Start a theatre in Sparta. This is the city that must stay happy and there are already 4 angry guys there
I set culture at 20%
Hope this war won't last too long and kill our economy. Hatty sure is going at light speed now and would be well ahead when we are ready to attack her

The great merchant is born

Units are healing in Lahore. Reinforcments are coming and MM is moving outdated units north and knights south, probably on pillaging duty.

With all the anarchy and money funding turns, I still didn't discover steam power yet. I guess next tech should depend on what MM and Hatty have at the moment. If possible, avoid techs already known, especially by MM

The next city is kinda of far from Lahore. So maybe we need to pillage/raze a bit next to Lahore while MM stacks are coming

Good luck Kikin. I think there's still hope in this one

Fellowship :
blid -- just played
Kikinit -- UP
Asperge -- On deck
