Warlord
Greetings all.
While I don't have lots of experience playing Civ at higher difficulty levels, I have played Civ I thru V. This was my first attempt in Civ V on the Warlord level. I think Warlord level is the highest I've played in any Civ game before, so please be kind...
In previous Civ installments I've always enjoyed going for the Cultural Victory. With the new game mechanics in Civ V, the Cultural Victory isn't so easy any more! With the introduction of City-States, I've got to keep them protected from aggressive opponents.
For this game, I was going for the Steam Achievement of "Bollywood" which is 'As Gandhi, win a cultural victory with 3 or fewer cities in your empire.' I enjoy these achievements and I hope they release tons more in the future.
Anyways, I was playing on Warlord level, Continents, Ancient Era, with everything else under normal conditions.
I've only got some pictures from 1645 AD, when I decided... "Enough! I need a break! Time to get some rest!" But for the rest, I didn't think to capture some photos. Sorry...
In this game, I started off with Delhi along a river. After a bit of exploring and getting a picture of the continent I found out that my neighbors were Askia (Songhai) and Oda Nobunaga (Japan). Why couldn't I just get a bunch of Gandhi's cousins as my neighbors?!?! Why did I have to get two of the most militaristic AIs?!?!
The City-States were Hanoi (Militaristic), Brussels (Cultural), Kuala Lumpur (Cultural), and Rio de Janeiro (Maritime). Hanoi being one of my closet neighbors, we had a enough space between us keep friendly. They did give me some nice military units, including a catapult.
Anyways, early on I got my two other cities built out in the open to makes sure they were well spaced out to get the most of the 36 tile radius. One was placed on the border of the Songhai and the other not far from Kyoto. Hindsight, it was a poor decision not to build a coastal city.
Up until this turn, I had the Tradition and Piety tree filled out and halfway through the Patronage tree. I already pumped out 9 World Wonders (the most for any Civ in this game) and had one of the strongest militaries, though lacking any experience.
It turned out that I drew first blood in this game. Japan ended up attacking Brussels, so I decided to declare war on him. He captured Brussels, but I ended up raising two of his cities (especially one way too close to my borders) on my way to liberate Brussels. The fighting was intense, I ended losing some of my units along the way. I pulled my army off my border with Songhai (wow... Songhai is in the dictionary for Firefox, who would of thought?) to help fight the Japanese. Since my cities were so far apart and I only had one road to get to the fighting, it took a long time to get my reinforcement there. I was able to capture a great merchant along the way also.
After the liberation, we sign a peace treaty and Oda goes back to lick his wounds. At this point I have some money saved up and I start throwing cash at Rio de Janeiro and Kaula Lumpur to get their bonuses.
Things continue smoothly until Askia declared war on Rio de Janeiro (which is right next to him). I gift about 4 units to Rio de Janeiro since I didn't want to get into a full war with Askia. Rio holds the initial attack off, but loses virtually all of its military (read: my military) along the way.
A short while later, Oda decides to decides to take another whack at Brussels. It's a little cocky since he has his Samurai units now. It turns out that Brussels doesn't have a standing army, as seen below.
My 3rd city bordering Japan.
My capital which is sitting pretty away from major Civs.
My second city on the border with Songhai.
By demographic measures, I am doing quite well, being in 1st or 3rd of everything.
I've got the highest points for all know Civs (Napoleon sailed by with his Caravel and said hi). Rio is still hanging in there, but without a military.
And lastly, Brussels on its own for the moment.
So, I am thinking about abandoning the Bollywood style win and take over the continent. What do you think I should do?
