Boring conquest...

I played as the Aztecs, destroyed the Mayans early on, and got a cultural victory in Tenochtitlan by barb-hunting and "farming" the Incans. ;) I also bought workers whenever I could from the AI.

Ah, the other way to adjust the difficulty: they say playing a native american is more of a challenge than your typical Europlayer, since the native military is outmatched (although i had a great time enslaving and capturing Portuguese treasures and almost drove them out of south america in one game. A big help there was to ally with the English sea dogs just as i attacked their colonies! So no reinforcements! That was fun...)

But even within the European powers, there's a distinct difference - it's easier to win with Portugal than say, Netherlands.

I actually had a deleted of a time with Portugal; though I've heard others espouse your point of view.

I just finished a game with Portugal (regent level) and found it surprisingly easy. The wonder that gives Portugal free colonists helps you get an early start. By mid game, I had colonized Africa, half the carribian, the northern half of South America, and a little bit of the southern end of South America. From there, it was all I could do to generate enough boats to ferry my treasures back and forth, as well as units to carry the treasures. I cruised to an easy victory.

That's not the problem, prepare for the initial assault to survive a few turns, then give up your european cities to let the palace move to America (go to the carribean islands), so you have a very short way to transport the treasures!

The capital jump is a good strategy, but somehow it seems like cheating to me. After all, none of the colonial powers moved their capitals to the New World in real life. Besides, as Portugal you start with two wonders in Lisbon -- it's tough to give those up.

Age of discovery was actually pretty fun. ;) It was one of my favorites. Rockin' the house as Portugal! Hello Iroquios! Your dead! Hello Aztecs, now your dead too! :)
