Bridges

Rivers can go over roads from the getgo. It's just that units crossing that river via that road do not get the 1/3 movement rate. When you discover Engineering, your units automagically get the 1/3 movement.

You may be thinking of civ2's Bridgebuilding advance, which allowed settlers to build roads on river tiles.

actually, no -- i didnt like civ 2 and only played it for a day or two. I dont really remember anything from that game.

I just misunderstood the engineering advance. Thanks for clarifying! :)

Didn't like Civ2?! Huh. I mean, it was no Civ1, but... What is it that you find more engaging about Civ3, then , exactly?

i feel its the true successor to Civ1. i dont really recall what i hated about civ 2 -- its been too long. I do recall hating that they put a "cheats" menu right there up top.

but there was more, too, of course. I just felt it moved in a direction away from Civ1 that i didnt like.

I loved SMAC though.
