Hi everyone,
Following @Recursive's retirement, we (Axatin and Hokath) would like to give a brief update on the status of the project and the plans for the near future. Before doing so, we would like to express our gratitude to Recursive for everything he did for Vox Populi. During his long-term service as Lead Developer, he made numerous and extensive contributions to the mod. In particular he's responsible for major overhauls of the Diplomacy AI which made the interactions with the AI civs much more meaningful and dynamic. Furthermore, Recursive designed and implemented the Vox Populi Congress, which gives the community an exceptionally high amount of control over the mod's development. The democratic and community-centered approach really makes VP stand out from other modding projects. Recursive always cared a lot about the opinions and wishes of the community and about giving the players the opportunity to actively shape the mod and contribute to it. The structures he implemented now enable us to manage this transfer of power, and we will give our best to build upon his work and lead the mod towards further improvements.
Recursive was both Lead Developer and VP Congress Host, these positions have now been split. I, Axatin will follow Recursive in the role of Lead Developer, which includes being responsible for new releases and reviewing the contributions made by others. As lead developer I’ll also have the final say on all code-related decisions. I, Hokath, will be the new Host of the Vox Populi Congress. In this position I'll be responsible for running the congress and overseeing the congress phases, for appointing the Magi and for moderating discussions. The Congress Host has the final say on all decisions related to the congress and to the proposals.
As to the current status of the mod and the plans for the upcoming months: As you all probably know, the dev team is currently working on the integration of the 4uc version of the mod. Work on this is being continued. Recursive's retirement forces us to revisit the schedule and to decide how to deal with the tasks that were previously assigned to him. The discussions on this within the dev team are ongoing and we will give an update to the release timeline as soon as possible. Related to this, the low number of developers who are able to do DLL modding is more and more becoming a bottleneck to the mod’s further development. We would like to use the opportunity and encourage everyone to consider getting familiar with DLL modding, including people without prior modding or coding experience. Every contribution is appreciated. There is a guide on DLL modding here, if you have any questions the active DLL developers will be happy to help.
After the release of version 5.0, there will be a period of time in which the developers will fix remaining bugs and the players have the opportunity to get familiar with the new version and its balance. A new congress session will follow.
