Bring Back the Civ II Renaming City System

That's it, really. I hate it when I dismiss a suggested city name and it keeps popping up again every time I found a city for the rest of the game. In Civ II, if you dismissed a name it did not turn up again until one started a new game. That system is, for obvious reasons, superior to the one in Civ III and IV.

Abother thing I'd like to see return is the ability to search for a city on the map. You know, the "Where the heck is [name of city]?" function. Why did they not include that one?

Oh dear! What a terrible thing! It must be such a terrible bother. You poor soul....

Look, why couldn't they keep a simple mechanism which meant that one didn't have to keep dismissing the same stupid name over and over? Your sarcasm is quite misplaced.

Is it really that annoying to highlight the damn thing and type a new name? If it is then u are really something

Look, it is annoying to see the same name pop up over and over and over. It may be just one name that one doesn't want, or doesn't want in that particular game, or except for a city with a particular function - whatever. Let me mention, just as an examnple, that some people want to call the capital of the Roman empire Roma, not Rome, and don't want to spend time the rest of the game dismissing the name "Rome" time and time over. The same with Moscow or Beijing - Peking to some. They fixed that in Civ II. They fixed that in Colonization. So why should it be impossible to fix in later versions of Civ?

I agree that suggesting the same name that you obviously don't want over and over is kind of silly.

@arronax: is it really that hard to disagree with someone in a civil manner?

@potatokiosk: Heh, somehow my 'ignore' list gets longer every day....

This has always been an irritant for me, too. You can always go into the XML files and change up the city naming list however you want, but this always results in you getting that "you are playing with a version of civ that is modified!" popup when you go to play multiplayer. But I, too, tend to avoid (for no obvious reason,) Nottingham, Atlanta, Cumae, and that oddly-named Zulu city that begins with a lowercase "u" and continues in a seemingly random mix of vowels and consonants.

Yes, uMulukhulululubundikundi or something like that. If I conquer that city in a game, I rename it.

This annoys me too! Like if I don't want to have both OLD and NEW Sarai, but I want the game to keep naming the cities after that... Well no luck there. I'd have to open the xml file and look up what the next names are and do it myself.

For that matter, I asked for something related to that in the mod section but no one answered.. Here is my request; I want the game to choose names RANDOMLY from the list instead of from the top to the bottom. It'd be refreshing to have another city as the capital sometimes for the AI. I don't really like the feeling of knowing the order in which cities were founded by just looking at the map and city names (Okay XYZ is the third city this civ always founds). I know you could just look it up in the game (each city is attached to a foundation date). But still, just for the sake of variety...

Speaking of searching for cities, it'd be nice if there was a scroll through cities in order of Hammers, Research, Wealth, Culture or Espionage, just to make it easier to find/check keep on top of which city will build fastest, or where oxford university would be best placed.

Scilly_guy you can do that. Open up your F1 menu, the domestic advisor screen. It has all your cities listed there and how much of everything they produce (hammers, maintenance, money, science, how many extra happy faces or health it has, etc). Now, you just have to click on the tab at the top, let`s say, on the happy face, and it'll relist everything in order of how many happy faces the cities have.. Same for beakers and all.

Only annoying thing is when you change things at the bottom of the screen, it auto-resorts everything to default... But it's definitely very useful.

Yes, the most annoying for me is the Russian city Yaroslavl'. I always want to remove that damned apostrophe, but then the city is refounded again and again.

Can't you guys just rename/add/delete/reorder city names in the xml files?! It's not that hard!

Some of us, no.

Some of us, yes, but we're too lazy/see it as a waste of time.

Some of us (e.g. myself) have perverse computers that don't let us save the changes we make to our XML files (I've been working on reordering the England list for months to no avail despite following all advice given to me...I long for the .txt files of SMAC!)

Sure you uncheckboxed the read-only attribute when you right click on Civ4CivilizationInfos before you try to edit?

I agree. Very annoying to name your capital something other than what it's supposed to be and then not getting any of the other cities on the list because the game keeps wanting to found Rome (I, too, like naming the Roman capital Roma). On the other hand, if you rename a city and the game skips over the next "auto-name," that could be annoying too. Let's say you just want to name a certain city without skipping over the next "auto-name" city. For instance, you want to name a city Suez (as I often do in World Map games) but you still want Elephantine to show up next and not have to rename every city you found for the rest of the game.
