OK, so I've been running into problems :wallbash: of all sorts with BtS since buying it, and I think I've finally got it sorted:

I don't install the game to the default directory. Instead, I route it to D:\Games\Civilization IV. This is, of course, done when installing the vanilla Civ IV, as the two expansions don't give the choice, they just scan the registry for the original entry, and install to that directory. OK, so far so good.

So, install Vanilla.
Install patch 1.09, then 1.61
Install Warlords
Install patch 2.08
Install BtS.

Everything up until that point works juuust peachy. Here's where things get all SNAFU'd on me...

Installing the BtS patch 3.17 seems to work fine, and throws no errors. But when double-checking things, I discover the directory D:\Games\Beyond the Sword. Which of course, shouldn't exist. And there is a directory D:\Games\Civilization IV\Beyond the Sword, right where it should be. All the files in the Games\BtS dir have newer dates than the files in the Games\Civ4\BtS dir, and the file list in the unexpected dir is incomplete. Also, the directory tree is slightly different.

So, it looks like the 3.17 patch isn't installing to the directory where BtS actually resides. Before simply copying everything from the unexpected dir to the stock dir, I wanted to check if anyone else has ever seen enything like this, has any ideas on how to fix it, or thinks I can just copy everything over...

Thanks.

I'm having the same problem, except that everything old is in C:\Program Files\2K Games\Firaxis Games\...

while the patch appears to be saved to

C:\Program Files\Firaxis Games\...

Suggestions? I'm reluctant to simply copy files from one directory another as a blind guess.

RickD, as we haven't heard back from anyone yet, I went ahead and tried it anyways (after copying the "originals" to a different directory). It seems to work fine.

Let me emphasize seems though. I haven't played to any great length, cause I'm having problems getting my mod to work right (a completely seperate issue), but the version number is finally listed correctly in-game, so that's encouraging.

What you should do when uninstalling old software is cleaning the registry too. It may be possible that some old entries for civ4 are wrong. Additionaly you should NOT move the installed directory to any other location. All patches and mod will be installed to the old directory in that case. So always try to keep the directory you installed the original software.

As I just posted in another subforum, I discovered that the 3.17 patcher is actually overwriting the registry key for :bts:' location (and not, strangely, for [civ4] or [c4w] ) - in my case, twice to C:\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization IV - Beyond the Sword (yes, you read that right) and once to C:\WINDOWS.

Moving the files over wholesale got things working for me, though it's running DOG-slow; but that's another topic.
