When I bought civ4 off of Steam ages ago, I didn't realize that they essentially made it a standalone install after checking that you had the vanilla version installed. Besides wasting a little disk space, this didn't cause me any trouble until now. In addition to the XML files located at

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\...\sid meier's civilization iv beyond the sword/Assets/XML

there is also

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\...\sid meier's civilization iv beyond the sword\Beyond the Sword\Assets\XML

containing all the same sub directory and file names. I'm trying to add music to particular eras per this thread, but the hazy wording in addition to my steam problem makes it hard to figure out which files I should be editing.

I tried removing an XML file from each directory to see if it was even being used, but the removal from either location resulted in a crash on start up.

If an XML file exists in both the root assets folder and the BTS assets folder, work with the one in the BTS assets folder. Less chance of BTS throwing errors at you for missing tags and the like.

And it's best to copy whatever file you're modding to the CustomAssets folder, if you want to play with your changes. Or to a new mod folder if you want to load a mod to load your changes. That way, if you screw up, it doesn't break your game and all you have to do to fix it is to delete the file in the custom assets folder or, if you don't want to lose the work, copy it someplace else.

At the very least I've been keeping backups of the original files, but are you saying that if I copy the files to the custom assets folder in My Documents the changes I make there will be reflected in the game?
