Custom Mod with Multiplayer?

Hi, I recently made a mod for civ 4 bts that adds several civilizations and leaders. I tried to play it with someone else with a LAN game, but when I made it they couldn't connect to it and vice versa. We both are using the steam version of civ 4, and the exact same version of the mod, and multiplayer worked with vanilla bts and with the next war mod. I don't know why it didn't work with the custom mod, do I need to change something within the mod to get it to work in multiplayer? (By "mod" I mean a file in Documents>My Games>beyond the sword>MODS.) Do I need to set the mod up differently? We also tried using the unsupported older version of steam (I heard that version has less problems with mods), and it changed nothing.
Does anyone know how to get the mod to work?

I don't think I have that folder because I have the game through steam. What do I do instead?
You have that folder, it's something like ...\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\Sid Meier's Civilization IV Beyond the Sword\Beyond the Sword\Mods
It might be a slightly different location, it depends on where you installed Steam or where is your Steam library folder.

Okay, I put it there but it won't show up when it's not in the "MODS" file too, I don't think it can find it in the other folder. Is there something else I need to do?

Can you post a screenshot of your mod folder in the location I suggested (with the folder path and contents visible)?

Steam version has a BTS folder within the btS folder...you have to use the lower-level folder. (edit: nvm..already mentioned)
