BtS won't install, problem with patching

First, I made a quick search, but didn't find anything of value.

Here's the case: I installed Civ 4 vanilla a couple of years ago. I had to fight with the XML (or wth they are called) errors back then. So, I finally got the game to work.

Now that I have bought the Beyond the Sword expansion, I have to fight this all over again.

So, the autorun starts just fine. Installer goes on, and I get the message about directX updates. That goes fine. But then, my game tells me I don't have the latest patch, which surprises me. Ok, the game starts to search/install the latest patch. Well, a few seconds and I get an error message. No info but a simple message, patch installation failed, and the installer shuts down.

How to make this work? I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one having this problem. I have Civ version 1.74. I hope fixing this won't include reinstalling Civ 4, since my brother took the CD to his own apartment.

I apologize if this has been asked a ton times before, but, I'm pissed. Can't they just make a game that works?

The latest version of BTS is 3.19. There are however often issues with it failing to patch in-game. It also often installs better if you patch to 3.17 first. Assuming you have CD/DVD and not downloaded versions, download the patches from this site and run the patch outside of the game. If you have Vista (or Win 7), make sure that you elevate the privelages for the patch ie: right-click on the .exe file and choose run as administrator. If you want further information you will need to post your dxdiag information and details of the version of civ you are running and what it is currently patched to. If you have downloaded versions of Civ 4 you will have to download the patches from the same place you downloaded the game from.

Nope, haven't downloaded the game. I really did borrow it to my brother, so in order to reinstall and try patching in another order, I'm going to have to wait until he comes around.

Hmm... you mentioned some good stuff. I'll try a few things, and report if any succeeds.

I downloaded the 3.19 patch and did what Furley suggested (open outside game and choose run as admin.) but it acted like it was installing it but did nothing. When I went to task manager it said it was not responding. My copy of Civ4 is from disks. I'll try it with a 3.17 patch and see if that makes a difference.

You can buy the game via download now and that need different patches.

Hopefully 3.17 first will help.

OK. The problem with mine was that I had to first install the patches for CIV4 vanilla and then I could load BTS. Then I installed each of those patches and now it is working fine.
