Bug: too many cities?

Whenever I play Civ2 I'm afraid to expand beyond 65-70 cities for fear my game will crash. Whenever I have more cities my game freezes when I try to change production in a city.
This makes my war effort very difficult because I cannot caputre cities as my city count will get too high. I'm forced to destroy cities, which either takes longer with units (I have to wait for the city to defend itself again before attacking-forcing it to lose 1 pop point) or needs massive armies of spies to poison water supplies (which gets boring after awhile).

Does anybody have similar problems with too many cities? Is there a patch to fix this? Or maybe it's me!

I'm afraid its you..well your machine or something.
The city limit is 256.Doesn't matter if one has 255 and another 1.Shouldn't matter anyway.

there are patches.Don't remember this problem as a specific fix though.
what version do you have?

I have version 2.42

I have also altered my strategies to fit within the constraints of this bug. I've become fairly powerful working with a core of 20 cities and about 40 more built later on with expansion and conquest. Of course that's at lower difficulty levels-the higher levels bother me (too much unhappiness).

hmmmm...yes it can very annoying.I had a similiar situation once in the latter part of Red Front.I had to save very, very often as the crashes were completely random.I'd move 100 units and have to do it all over again.I started saving every 10 units or so.Not a real solution....but it worked.

At that point though, there were over 1500 units and well over 200 cities present in the scenario.Maybe you are pushing the game limits......2098(iirc) total units allowed(all civs),1998 for one.256 total cities.

and with 2.42 you have the final version of solo or classic civ2.No more patches to be had for that version.

I find that it takes many hundreds of cities before the game decides to stop me, and it lets me build one a turn afterwards. I have a normal version of civ2. Has it gone mad?
