bug with in-game map creationg

I am having trouble with playing Civilization IV because when I try to play, part of the left and right part of the map gets trimmed off, and isn't an actual part of the game. Has anyone else had this problem, or how to possibly fix it. I have a Windows 7 operating system (it might not be my OS though because I have been able to play one game without the bug occurring), but I don't know how to check what video or sound card I have along with amount of RAM.
