I have the AI say things like "It pays me to say so but we need your assistance" and "show the world what a great leader you are by helping those less fortunate." Can I do it back to them? I know I can go into the "Demand" screen, but I would like to do it nicely so they don't get pissed and kill me.

Open trade, select gold amount, offer nothing, hit propose.

I'm pretty sure this doesn't work. Have you actually ever had the computer agree to doing this? They usually just say that I need to offer them a fair trade.

It's not an exact equivalent case, but sometimes you can be surprised...

Catherine declared on a nearby sweet city state. It cried plaintively to the world, "We'll look favorably on anyone who takes out 3 Russian units..." But that's not the way I work... :mischief:

I turned up fast with 3 Chariot Archers, got her units in range, but did not fire. Then I went to see Catherine on the standard Trade screen and dialled up "Make peace with city state" on her side and nothing on my (Ramkhamhaeng's) side. No demands. Just a pleasant tête-à-tête. :smug: "That will do nicely sir," she said, and away she went, taking her troops with her.

On the downside, I didn't get the bonus from the city state. On the upside, everyone stayed at peace, and I wasn't distracted from getting a cultural victory inside 300 turns.

Sometimes it pays to be cheeky. :D

Something like this happened to me. I was playing the 3 city cultural challenge as Wu Zetian. Alexander declares on my cultural CS ally. A few turns later, I try to get Alex to make peace with the CS and he does! He didn't even ask for anything!

Of course, he declared war on the CS a dozen turns later, but by that time, I moved my scouts around the CS and blocked Alex from being able to conquer it while stones rained down on his riflemen and slowly chipped away at his army.
