Bush Daughters alcoholics?

I'll be 19 in 2 and a half months and I've never smoked or drank. Thank you Kefka. I thought I was the only one.

but a little alcohol here and there is harmless.

It's getting DRUNK constantly that kills brain cells and stuff. NOT good

Redwolf is right....a little bit here and there won't hurt you. But casual drinking is one step closer to alcoholism. (I'm not saying that all drinkers are alcoholics, but my father is and my grandmother is so I feel it's a step in the wrong direction for me.)

Anyway....

First of all I have no problem with the Bush daughters drinking under age. I did it.

The reason that the media made a big deal about these girls drinking is because of their celebrity status. In being a celebrity it just goes with the territory.

These girls really should have known that though. They knew they were breaking the law and that it would be seen as an example of the lack of reasonability they they were taught but they did it anyway. But seeing as Bush is shucking reasonability for California's crisis I'm not surprised that a lack of responsibility runs in the family.

Oh well,I guess that's what the American people wanted since a majority of them voted for Bush. Oh wait, the majority voted for the other guy, but Bush said the law was more important than the number of votes.

That's a little insulting isn't it? To imply that most people that drink are UNDISIPLINED.

The only thing wrong with alcohol is when you continually drink to excess... THAT'S bad. But if you drink responsibly a few nights a week... That hardly makes you unintelligent or undisiplined.

As a matter of interest, what are the U.S. laws regarding age and drinking in private at home (presumably with alcohol provided by parents). And what are the U.S. laws regarding age and brewing one's own beer?

In the US, it's illegal for anyone under 21 to consume alcohol. Regardless of who provides it, or where its consumed.

As far as laws concerning production, I don't know. But, I'd venture to guess that you have to be 21 to do so.

Land of freedom and you can't drink till you are 21...I've been drinking legally from the age of 18 and thus MUST be un-disciplined
and unintelligent -shame I spent all those years getting educated and going and doing a degree, yeah.

Not entirely, parents or legal gardians may serve (they must be present) alcohol (in strict moderation) to their children

I was too abbreviated in my post, I did not make clear that I was referring to the SUBJECT of the thread, UNLAWFUL drinking by UNDERAGE persons.
I concur with your opinion of lawful moderate drinking.

are we scandinavians the only ones with good drinking habits? here in sweden you can drink legal in public places when you are 18, but if you are younger the police doesn´t care, maybe the take the alcohol away from you but that´s all. i´ve been drinking since i was 13 and i think it´s a good thing to start drinking early, at least from when you are 15. many of my friends who started to drink when they were 18 or older often gets too drunk because they have not learned were their limits are or because they don´t know their bodies signals.

I haven't been following this debacle...I mean debate.

I must say, it's ridiculous to think the Bush daughters are alchoholics. Let me ask you something? Did you drink in college? Was there a temptation to drink in college? Did you want to drink in college? I'm sure for most honest people, the answer is 'yes.' Now, why are we making such a big deal out of this? Is there a serious problem. Probably not, although we don't know...it's most likely that there is not a drinking problem here. Jenna Bush is nineteen years old. Of course she's going to drink. It's her own immaturity that got her caught, but hey, what do you expect? (She's a Bush daughter.) Let's leave the kids alone okay? There's no reason to pursue this further.

But see.. thats my point. Just because you're an underage drinker - that doesn't make you irresponsible.

In my country 19 is the legal age. So if i drink respobsible at 19 I'm fine. BUT in your country I'm all of a sudden an irresponsible undisiplined teenager? it doesn't make sense.

and thats my point about the Bush daughters. who cares if they wanted to buy booze. it doesn't make them bad people - 19 year old do it legally here.

Hell.. our legal drinking age has changed like 3 times.

With 21 as the minimum age for consuming / buying alcohol in Texas, I can understand that all those US students go to Cancun, Mexico during spring break to drink enough for the rest of the year
lol.gif

Seriously; how can you be a student and don't drink. It's actually good for your brains as the weakest brain cells will be taken away by the alcohol, thus leaving the supreme cells in your brain: drinking makes one smarter

Violating a penal statute for so PETTY A PURPOSE of obtaining intoxicants does make you irresponsible.

SMOKING IS THE #1 CAUSE OF YOUR THING NOT WORKING!

Its one of those laws that actually serves no purpose. 21 is a ridiculous drinking age anyway.

The United states government can force you into the military and send you off to die in a foreign land on a poltical whim at 18. Yet you have to be 21 to buy a beer? What a crock of **** that is.

I agree. I suspect it's a throwback from our Puritanical past. We have more laws regulating morality than a 21st century democratic world power should have. All indications seem to be that countries with lower drinking ages have fewer problems with alcohol because people grow up with it and are used to it. There's no 'forbidden fruit' aspect to alcohol in Germany, say, or France. But here in the United States, kids like to get drunk and cause trouble, not because being drunk is inherently enjoyable, but just because they get a rush from doing something wrong. If we lowered our drinking age to more closely approach something like rationality, we wouldn't have as many alcohol-related problems as we have. You'd think we'd have learned our lesson from Prohibition.
