CTP doesnt suck. I've been playing CTP for three years now and I wish that Civ3 would have expanded to more advanced technology and units. And with the ability to settle colonies undersea and in space, a whole fronteir to dominate opens up to the player. Can you fight underwater with Marines in Civ3? Or fight with starfighters in space in Civ3? No, you can't. Now if someone made a scenario of something that could do it, then Civ3 would be a much better game.
