I posted this in general discussions because I wanted to hear from people that are not having a problem - if they exist. Then I will know the problem is specific to some users.

About 1/5 of my screen is grey. Others having this problem have posted pictures: http://img202.imageshack.us/img202/2112/greybar.jpg

I just can't believe after a year to patch it, this game won't run at that resolution, which is pretty much a standard for 30" monitors. I know that 30" monitors are in the minority, but I also know there are a lot of them out there playing games.

It seems impossible that a modern game wouldn't work. It really goes to a scaleable graphics engine, which is necessary to futureproof the game. Even Total Annilihation from 1997 works fine at 2560x1600. High resolution is great for games like Civ because it allows you to see more of the map at once, in high detail.

Right now the only fix I have is to use a lower resolution, which causes the screen to be blurry and sacrifices a ton of detail. I find this wholly unsatisfactory so I choose not to play for now. I am concerned that they know of the problem but are choosing to ignore it permanently. Hopefully I'm wrong.

this does seem quite unbelievable! i assume u have the latest video card drivers and such?

In the Options menu under Video Options, the max resolution is 1920X1080. It doesn't matter at the moment what kind of video setup you have or how new your drivers are, 1920X1080 is the limit. Firaxis/2K Games will have to make the call whether or not enabling higher resolutions on the video engine will get them a return on the investment in coding the change. CiV is a bit of a niche game as it is so I wouldn't hold my breath.

I run it at 2560x1440 on my iMac with no hitches, all the video settings are not maxed out though.

I run CiV on a 30inch Samsung at 2560x1600 on Vista with no problems, all setttings max since release day. It can be done. Check your drivers again.

Well that is interesting. Even the 2560x1440 comment is helpful because from what I have read those people are having problems too.

I am under Win XP. I can't change that for now because a lot of things won't work, most importantly my ergodex keyboard which has only xp drivers. Total Annihilation won't run on my windows 7 machine, and my copy of HOMM 5 Epic states several times "Win XP ONLY". Since they say it in bold at least 3 times on the outside of the box, I never even tried it.

I last updated the drivers in September 2011 so they are pretty recent, released way way after Civ 5.

Does anyone have it working at 2560x1600 under Win XP?

I found this strange link to Aspyr: http://support.aspyr.com/index.php/kb/article/000782 but it iplies no one can run 2560x1600.

I have A hp zr30w and have been able to run the game at 2560x1600 with out problems. Off topic but at this resolution it's beautiful

Running win 7

The screenshot you posted shows the terrain render getting cut of at 2048 pixels, while other interface elements are rendered seperately past that point. It may not be the reason but it sounds a lot like the 2048x2048 texture size limit. What is your graphics card? Are the drivers up to date?

A few things you can try:

Make sure your video card drivers are up to date.

Download the DXCapsViewer utility. This normally comes with Microsoft's DirectX software development kit (a big download that installs lots of stuff) but you can find unofficial downloads of just the exe with Google (For example). Open it up, and in the tree on the left start with "DirectX Graphics Adapters" at the top which should expand to show you video card (you will probably see several identical ones, either 2 or 3 depending on how many monitors your card supports). Expand the first one then the expand the D3D Device Types node, then the Reference node and finally click the Caps node. On the right side you'll see a bunch of technical stuff - near the top should be MaxTextureWidth and MaxTextureHeight. Hopefully these should say 4096 or 8192. If it says 2048 and you have the latest drivers you are out of luck - your video card just can't make a texture big enough to fill the whole screen.

Assuming your card does support 4k or 8k textures, but Civ doesn't seem to be working you can also try turning down the graphics acceleration (compatiblity) by one notch from Full. This is usually found in Display Properties->Advanced->Trouble Shooting, but on Vista/Windows 7 it may be greyed out if your display driver doesn't support it.

That is an old knowledge base article regarding an issue with an early version of the Mac port. It was based on the DirectX9 PC version. From what I recall, the gray bar at high resolutions was just with the DX9 version, which is why you're seeing it on Windows XP.

11,891 12,995 Football Manager 2012 Demo
9,242 11,922 RAGE
8,726 9,438 Left 4 Dead 2

5th highest played game on steam right now (usually when i look it is higher) not bad for a niche game!

Thanks again for all the responses. I am still working on it but still no luck. I got the 11.9 drivers released 28 Sept 2011, still a no-go.

When I get a chance I'll look into the texture thing - HOMM6 is out tomorrow though:). My card is a Radeon 5850, should be more than sufficient. It only has 1GB GDDR5 but that seems standard for even the top end, though I know there are some with 2 GB.

Still, no one said they had it working under Win XP specifically yet, much less with an ATI card driver.

That picture was posted by someone else BTW, I used it since mine is exactly the same. Our full discussion is here: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=396015

I would love to solve this. I know how beautiful games are in 2560x1600 when they work. Plus I can see 80% of it now, and DavidCAD is correct about it just being the terrain render and also the 2048 is spot on. I know this cause I created a 4:3 video mode at 2136x1600, just to test the theory that below 2500 would work. Plus 2136x1600 lets heroes 5 run without stretching. There was still a small grey bar just about (2136-2048) wide. So maybe he is onto something.
