can being "exiled" on your own continent be negative to tourism??

Now my last game I tried NOT to get tourism/ culture as much as possible as I was sick of winning CVs lol so I literally threw away every great artist etc. I got.. BUT that being said by the 1900s I had like 40 tourists! I was Gilga in this pre-R&F game and started off quickly slaughtering the two civs that spawned on my continent (those default settings... I was sick of slow starts in Emperor so sue me xD) the thing was, there was NO connection between my continent and the other one so... since it took forever (I think it was... 1200 ad or so when I finally got cartography or w/e) to get to the other side I spent at least a millennia (1000 years?) just building up my empire/ wonders etc. so I just think I shoulda' had more. is it possible that the reason (other than the fact I AVOIDED most things that would get me that culture victory lol) I did not get tourists early was cuz they could not reach me?? lol I mean... logically I'd think so...

terrible natural wonders too, dead sea and galapagos island I couldn't even reach :/ I did get the darwin achievement though. Also one of the other civs was France so... I did get a little bit of tourism just to keep up with them (make sure they don't win the CV before I could... I ended up going RV just cuz I never had and I killed the two on my continent so fast that everybody got a religion xD so it was easy to just let the last civ keep their cap and just convert it and boom, galileo video or w/e. The last civ got their religion at like 1600... talk about new age...
