Can I increase the length of time between Science Advances?

I'm wondering if there is a way to increase the length of time it takes to get a new science discovery, without having to increase game difficulty.

I would enjoy Civ 2 more if the games lasted longer giving more time in between science discoveries so that building those first horse units would actually be valuable. It would be valuable because it would take a long time to get to the next level of technology (Elephants).

I think science advances to fast in the game and I'd like to slow it down so as to enjoy the game, rather than just spend my time building new units and deleting obsolete units. Wouldn't it be more fun to go Phalanx vs Elephant for a lot longer rather then having to upgrade immediately to Knights because they just suddenly became available after you finally got your first Elephant built?

I hope you guys catch my drift. Is there a way to modify the original Civ 2 or 2.42 to increase the amount of science points it takes to get each new advance, rather than by increasing difficulty level?

Is there any programs that will do that for me? Or a way to edit the game files to make that happen?

In scenarios, you can increase the tech paradigm, increasing it will make it slower.

In rules.txt, you can reduce the amount of trade in terrain and bonus squares, which will make it much harder to put gold into research.
