Can I link two computers together with a LAN cable...

...to play civ multiplayer? Or do I have to play over an internet connection?

Yes, you can play civ multiplayer over a LAN.
Just select "network" from the multiplayer menu.

Oh, thanks for the reply but I dont think I explained myself right.
I'm at uni and our bandwidth is limited so playing online is really out of the question. What I was trying to say is can me and a friend link our computers directly together with the LAN cable or am I just being silly?!!

Yes, you could do this, but you would need to set up a network connection in the OS.
You would also need to make sure you have an Ethernet card in both of your computers.

Yes we both have ethernet cards. How would I go about setting up a connection between the 2 comps? Would it affect my other network settings (i.e. the one I use when I plug the LAN cable into my uni network)? Thanks

Just to add that I am running Windows ME and my friend Windows 98, if that makes any difference

Here's a guide on how to set up a LAN on Windows 9x.
Since you already have a connection to your universty, some steps will probably be unnecessary.
