Can vassals trade

on a couple of occasions I have asked the enemy to capitulate - normally I finish a war with total anihilation of the AI civ but but if they have scattered islands or a large area of tundra/wasteland then I find the final push a distraction from fighting more powerful civs

at that stage once I have a vassal I try to build them up a bit. I give them all the techs which the rest of the map has

I would share all my tech if I thought they wouldn't trade them - the question is therefore can they be trusted not to

are AI vassals allowed to trade. if so can they be prevented from doing so

Start a custom game, and check the "no tech brokering" option.

yeah they can. With no tech brokering you can't trade techs you haven't researched yourself.

I prefer to gift them millitary units, rather than techs if a lot of backwards civs demanding/ripping them off would be an issue. This saves me a lot of support costs. For example I've had 1-5 city vassals with over 100 modern armors, and a navy with full air support to go with it, Just think of the money that saved me, and besides my millitary was huge compared to that anyway. Oh and as a sidenote the vassal described here never even got to feudalism at immortal difficulty, ~1800 when I finally got to domination.
