Can someone please tell me exactly what it is I need to do once I am in the Trade Table in order to be able to request that another civilization convert to my civilization's state religion? You see, when I'm in there, I can make all sorts of trade proposals involving technology and resources but nothing happens when I click on the words 'Adopt' or 'Convert'. Am I missing something here? Thanks.

Not a technical issue rather a gameplay issue. If the 'convert' or 'adopt' option is in red, they won't do it and if you rollover that option it will give you a reason why.

If it is possible to get someone to convert to our state religion, the name of if will appear underneath "Convert" in the trade table. Clicking on the word "Convert" itself will never do anything. For the option to be available though the following must be true:

1)You must be currently running a state religion.

2)The other Civ must currently be running a state religion that is not the same as yours.

3)Your religion must be presen in at least one of the other civ's cites.

Unless all three of these are true the option to convert them to your religion will not appear at all. Even if they are all true the other Civ may not necessarily be willing to convert, but in that case the name of your religion will be listed underneath "Convert" in red.

Similarly "Adopt" is merely the heading for the list of options, and doesn't do anything itself. To ask another civ to adopt your civics the following must be true:

1)You can only ask the AI to swap to a civic you are currently running.

2)The AI must not already be running the same civic

3)The AI must have the necessary technology to switch to that civic

4)The UN must not have passed the universal civic resolution for that column.

Unless all these are true, the option for them to switch civic will not appear under "Adopt".

Thank you very much, MrCynical. I think you may have solved my problem. I'm not sure whether my civilization met all of the criteria you listed. I've had an absolute ball playing Civilization IV on and off for most of the Easter long weekend. It's now just after midnight here in Melbourne, Australia. I think I should go to bed as my brain is like jelly right now. Thanks again.

this thread seems old now, but i'm looking for tips on how to get my enemies to convert to my religion. isabelle is a religious freak and keeps declaring war on me for not being buddist, but i'd rather her just switch to my religion. i have the option, but does she have to like me more? or do i need to spam her with my religon?

Isabella can be a pain if you won't convert to her state religion. Though it's more a gameplay issue, either convert to her faith and get her off your back, take the fight to her or spread your own religion to her cities. The latter may be the most differcult if you are at war with her. But if you take a few of her cities you are killing two problems at once.
