Hello there!

i have the civ IV complete package (original) installed on a pc with vista.

Since i've changed my dvd-drive to another number B instead of D, i get the message cannot locate dvd-rom.

So far, nothing unusual.

So i uninstalled the game, and cleaned my register with CCleaner, installed the game again ans still i get this message!

You would say: change the number back, but i can't or i'll ruin my whole music collection wich is on an extern harddrive D now!

What can i do about this? Does someone know wich file i have to change?

yes i installed it with the admin rights and i've deleted all remaining files i could find.

Then i've used registerycleaner, reinstalled the game, started it from the dvd, and still i get this message.

It worked well before i changed the number of the dvd-player :S

are you running it with admint rights?
have you tried a compatibility mode?
it is well possible that it registers the "correct" drive number somewhere - as for all that you could find: did you get the ones I list in the below howto for a complete reinstall? Also did you explicitly give the installers admin rights or did you just install it on an admin account?

install the most recent version of DirectX 9c from Microsoft

then do the following for a clean reinstall:

Uninstall and Reinstall Civ4 Warlords BtS :

Try to follow this order when doing stuff:
Use Control panel to uninstall Beyond the Sword, then Warlords, then Civ4
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\sid meier's civilization 4" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\warlords" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\beyond the sword" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\application data\my games\sid meier's civilization 4" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\application data\my games\warlords" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\application data\my games\beyond the sword" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\local settings\application data\my games\sid meier's civilization 4" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\local settings\application data\my games\warlords" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\local settings\application data\my games\beyond the sword" manually
(note: application data is a hidden directory so you need to configure windows explorer to show hidden files, also these directories in application data are sometimes removed by the uninstall routine)
Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{CFBCE791-2D53-4FCE-B3FB-D6E01F4112E8}" (Civ4)
Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{3E4B349F-10B5-4586-9D99-489A90A8B228}" (Warlords)
Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{32E4F0D2-C135-475E-A841-1D59A0D22989}" (BtS)
(note: InstallShield Installation Information is a hidden directory so you need to configure windows explorer to show hidden files).
Install Civ4, immediately patch it to 1.61 (download it fresh from here)
Install Warlords, immediately patch it to 2.08 (download it fresh from here)
Install Beyond the Sword, immediately patch to 3.17 (download it fresh from here).

thanks for your help!

it ran fine so i think there's nothing wrong with the compatability mode.
I've installed it with the "full" admin rights.

I've installed direct-x 9c

I have civ4 complete so i only can install and delete the whol game, and not bts, warlords and civ4 seperatly.

I have vist so not all the path's you're giving me are the right one's, but i manged to delete:

program files/2k games/......
my games/beyond the sword/.....
application data/beyond the sword/......

there wasn't a relevant file in the installshield installation information directory.

Then i used registery cleaner.

restarted my cpu.

Reinstalled the game (once again i can only install the whole game, and not the sub-games seperatly)

I can't patch any of the games, because i have the whole game.

And still i get this message.... I'm about to go crazy! AAARRGHHHH

it works!!!

changed the drive's name to "N" instead of "b" and now it works, while i installed the game when the drive was called "b".

So the game begins to search for the dvd from c or d i guess.

Thanks for your support ori!

Hi all,
Just had this error pop up on my computer. I couldn't believe my eyes, i was like aggggggggghhhhhhhhh NOOOOOOOOOOO! Thankfully it sorted it's self out when i took the disk out (BtS), restarted the computer and poped it back in. Phew!

Sorry to bump this thread, but I have spend hours trying to get Civ4 Complete to work, as I was getting "Cannot locate the dvd-rom" message al the time on my Windows 7 laptop. There are many people still having the same trouble out there.

Changing the drive's name is the magic bullet. I did also install the game in a custom folder rather than the default one, which may or may not have helped; however nothing worked until I changed the DVD drive name.
