I even tried creating an image file and opening it with Daemon Tools.

SAME ERROR!!! :( :( :( :( :(

omg this is getting me so angry, this error just makes no FREAKING sense

DRM DRM DRM. They write bad sectors onto the media. I think civ4 uses safedisk. Many drives do not read it correctly. Basically, the DRM breaks the way a disk is supposed to be read by writing bad sectors onto the disk... many drives can't handle this type of crap. The sad part is... you paid for it ;)

Please does anyone know what else i can do? I've been up all night trying to get this to work. I don’t know what else to do. I'm still getting this DAMN error saying insert the correct CD-ROM. ITS NOT A CD ROM is a FREAKING DVD. This F$@ing attempt at copy protection is pathetic when someone your legitimately buys the game and cannot run it!

Sorry about being so angry i just dont know what else to do

Please if anyone can help me out i will be very greatful

Have you seen this Knowledge Base article at Microsoft?:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;228985

They offer various suggestions such as logging in as Administrator to play, updating Safedisk driver files for Windows XP, updating DVD drive files, re-configuring McAfee settings if it's on your computer, and even emptying your temporary files folder, among others.

For all we know this may be a Windows or a driver problem rather than a bug in the game or the protection method. I know this must be immensely frustrating for you, I would be pulling my hair out too, if I were you.

Hope this helps, anyway, and please keep us updated if you find a solution. Good luck!

Thanks alot for your reply Velvet-Glove.

I have tried everything in that link you provided and still no luck :( :(

Your right soo frustrating, i think im going bald from pull all my hair out

I've seen such a problem on another game, where the protection caused problem with some drives. They either had to use the second one or to buy another one...

I don't know how confident/knowledgeable you are with PC's, Ryanstein, but if it were me I would try a bit of tinkering (not that I fully know what I'm doing, but I would give it a try, LOL!)...

1. I would check the Windows Registry to ensure all references/keys to the emulator programs were gone (sometimes standard uninstalling is just not throrough enough)

2. I would try going into Safe mode, removing all CD/DVD drives from Device manager then re-booting and allowing Windows to re-detect it/them. (I once had a curious mouse problem... I discovered about four mice installed in Safe mode. Once these were removed and a single one re-detected later everything was fine. I learned then that Safe mode can reveal problems, and sometimes solutions, that are not always visible in normal mode.).

3. As a last resort I would simply re-install Windows and start afresh. Drastic stuff but I have a ruthless streak when it comes to Windows playing up big time. If it doesn't play nicely I WILL destroy it if I have to. Zero tolerance, that's me. :p

Finally, if, like me, you have more than one DVD drive, try and use the first one in your drive letter list and stick to it... for both installing and playing. I have a player and a burner... the burner I keep for burning - I always use the player to install and my Civ III disk is usually permanently kept in that one (until I get my Civ IV disk in the next day or two I hope!).

Sorry if you have already tried these things. I won't profess to be any sort of expert on the matter, like most people I just muddle through problems when I get them. :crazyeye:

Yeah i tried that program but it didnt work :(

You also pressed that ''Hide'' button in that program? (just checking).
Also try to put it in another dvd drive and try crack again.
Or unplug 1 dvd player ( pull out a cable ) and then try that crack.

Been reading this thread from start to bottom and I starting to get real nervous. Will probably get my CIV IV copy tomorrow so I have a question. If I have deamon tools am I screwed if I don’t uninstall it before I install CIV IV, or is the European version released without that copy protection?

i think im going to reinstall windows

i shouldn't have to be using all these programs that people use when they download the game for free. i paid for this game and it SHOULD be working. but i guess because i've used things like alcohol 120% and daemon tools in the past (not for piracy) i cant play this game with my current setup. its really sad when a copy protection can cause so many problems for me.

As a last resort re-installing everything is probably your best option now. If it's been a while since you did that then you will probably see a few improvements in overall speed and efficiency which can only be a bonus. I would be very surprised if your game didn't work after this.

Let us know how you get on!

I use this method to get my civilization IV works.

1. Right click "My Computer"
2. Go to "Hardware" tab
3. Click "Device Manager"
4. Select "DVD/CD-ROM Drives"
5. Disable all other CD-ROM Drives EXCEPT the one with the disc.
6. Pray that it works (At least it did for me, =P)

I'm now starting to pray that I don't have the same problem. Although I don't have any of the banned programs on my PC I do have 2 DVD drives. I know it shouldn't be a problem, but reading the thread to me it sounds as if something doesn't like the presence of 2 DVD drives.

I have a dvd-burner and a dvd, and it goes fine for me. this issue isn't general...
