Can't accept embassy

I started my 1st epic game and noticed after turn 200 my embassy with Spain ended on turn 87. When I try to trade accept embassy, I'm told I already have an embassy and can't add it into the trade. The original deal started on turn 39 for 1 gold for my embassy. Anyone else seen this happen before?

I'm playing on a tiny map with 4 Civs (I've only met Spain). I’m on version 1.0.3.144

Thanks!

Uh, if you're desperate you could try Denouncing her. That punts the Embassy out... but you'll suffer for fixing it this way.

.. it is possible that the deal expired was not the embassies themselves but the 1 gold. which can be renewed again. especially if it was 1 gold per turn which would make more sense anyway.

The upfront cost of an embassy is just 1 gpt, but unlike other trades (like open borders, lux and strategic trades), embassies do not expire in 30 turns. They will remain in place forever (unless, of course, they are canceled by a denunciation or DOW).

Yeah, only the gpt itself expires in time, the embassy remains.

And I discovered the AI can screw you over this. Normally when I sold an embassy for 1 gpt early the AI always accepted to sell me an embassy in his capital for the same price once I have Writing. Heck, they usually come offering to share embassies after wars, long before they're ready to get friendly again.

I'm my last game Casimir screwed me. We had a DoF and had been friends for the whole game until Ideologies, he had a larger army, I don't expand as I'm Venice, and we're not even close to one another with Germany and Iroquois between us, but he wouldn't accept to sell me an embassy in his capital. I've tried to offer more gpt (I proposed up to 25, just as a test), to make it part of a luxury trade (he would pay 7 gpt + 100 gold for Pearls, but wouldn't accept 5 gpt+embassy for it), to offer OB+embassy for OB+gpt. Nothing works. What was odd is that he kept telling me "any deal wouldn't be fair for me", which usually shows up only when the AI doesn't have enough to offer.

That changed not much since he had an embassy and it didn't stop more advanced diplo relations with each other, but it was strange. I suspect a bug, as our diplo status appeared as "shared embassies" in the diplo screen.

Thanks for the replies. Im blaming time change...I should of known embassys dont expire.

It could be he doesn't want you know where his capital is, even though you may already know where it is.
I'm not too sure on this point: you only get to know if a particular civ has built a wonder(as opposed to a far away land) if you have an embassy in their capital. You can check the diplomacy overview screen to see what civs have built what(or captured). If so you can't covet his wonders that you don't know about.

I thought it must be that at first, but we eventually got OB and DoF and I had TR to his capital.

The AI isn't normally very protective re: the embassy. Most AI you've gone to war with or that denounced you come offering an exchange of embassy a few turns later.

I highly suspect it was a glitch, as I said in the diplo screen we appeared as "sharing embassies" but only he had one in mine. It's like something prevented the AI from seing he had embassy to sell to me or to include it in a deal.

It's the only time I've seen this and the only "unusual" condition in that game was that I sold the embassy to the AI and when I got Writing I didn't reciprocate, I waited until later in the game after the gpt deal he had given me was over (but of course the embassy remains, he just no longer paid for it). But I doubt it's what produced a glitch as this must be a fairly frequent situation for others.

What I mean is that an embassy is the formal means to know where a capital is, and Poland doesn't want to formally tell you where his capital is. It would seem that only 1 embassy is required for advanced diplomacy, like you can get open borders without having researched civil Service(as long as they have).

I understood, but I still think it's a glitch. Beside the fact it said "shared embassies" in the global diplo screen (and not "they have an embassy in our capital" as it would normally), on the trade screen Casimir gave the "we can offer nothing that would be a fair deal for you" when I put embassy and ask what he want. The AI only says that when they have nothing to give in exchange for something you offer that they would like but can't afford", it's the pointer to offer them a "generous deal" or even a gift, which gives a positive diplo modifier. I've never seen the AI say this when you ask for something they have but refuse to sell you, so it looked like a bug that prevented the AI from selling it/seeing it. If I could find that game I'd try to denounce Casimir to see if it solved the bug and afterward we'd be able to exchange embassies again.

Theorically the AI could refuse to sell embassy, but I'm not even sure I ever saw it do that except on the first few turns after a war (and even then not always. This means its diplomatic threshold to agree to embassies is extremely low - the lowest of all diplo actions - and it must totally hate you to refuse it, and probably be quite weaker or afraid). 90% of the time it's the AI that comes to you to exchange embassies on the turn your discover Writing, or just a few turns after they denounced you or you denounced them. 99% of the time the AI agree to share embassies on the first turn you meet them.

Gotchya, prolly a glitch. In my current game I have Poland as a neighbor. The world is Order(thanks mainly to my amazing tourism), but Poland is Autocracy. We were DOF's for several millenia until he picked autocracy(I picked order in the 1600's). He denounces me and will only accept an embassy trade for several gpt(which usually is even trade). Since I got Order as the world ideology I think I might take his Prora, which he stupidly built in a coastal city.......

Ah, good to know. I've rarely pissed off the AI enough for them to refuse an even trade for embassies, I guess! I also often don't bother to ask them for the deal again once we're enemies, I let them come to me asking for it, and it's probable I haven't noticed some never actually do.
