Can't build "temple of planet"

In my recent game I was doing well until I made the error of building the secret project that let's you launch satellites for cheap. What happens is that it double's your mineral output when you build satellites. That would be okay if only I could build "temple of planet" everywhere to counter the enviromental impact. But for some reason I cannot.

I'm wondering if this is because I gained the "Secret of Alpha Centauri" from an artifact and it didn't net me the extra tech I was supposed to get either. Also, I've triggered global warming twice in three years. What's up with that? Real global warming might rise sealevels one or a few meters in a century, but here it's 333 meters in 20 years. That's ridiculous! Is there any way to turn off this feature?

Have you built Centauri Preserves in your bases? They are a prerequisite for Temples of Planet and also counter eco-damage.

When you acquire a "Secrets" tech from an artifact, you get the free tech on the following turn. This can be easy to overlook.

In the FUNDAMENTAL RULES section of Alpha(x).txt, look for the line

1, 1 ; Numerator/Denominator for frequency of global warming (1,2 would be "half" normal warming).

Try changing the "1, 1" to "0, 0". I've read that this change will eliminate global warming, but I haven't tried it.
 
Yes I've built the centauri preserves everywhere. I always do before I build factories. I will try to eliminate global warming though. I'll let you know if it works.
 
It seems I have some earlier version of the game.That line you described doesn't exist in my alpha.txt file. There is another line about global warming but it only has one number in it.

8, ; Global Warming (Latitude DIVISOR for global warming) Smaller # increases effect of warming

I also have a bug. I cannot build punishment spheres either (not that I want to but it would be nice to be able to). I do remember that at one time in the game I could. So my current hypothesis is that I've built a secret project that is buggy and forbids the construction of more buildings than it's supposed to.
 
Most likely, your problems are caused by not being fully patched. The official patches may be found here. If you have SMAC, first apply the SMAC v4.0 Update, then the SMAC Win 2000/XP Update. If you have both SMAC and SMAX, apply the SMAC v4.0 Update, then the Alien Crossfire v2.0 update and finally the SMAC Win 2000/XP Update. Note: The win 2000/XP update should be installed even if you have a later OS, such as Vista or Windows 7.
 
The space elevator is not your problem since the production bonus doesn't affect the eco damage. Your problem is that you have too few forest farms, hybrid forests and preserves (each of these improvements increase the allowed minerals by 1, temples does that as well). Running green economy will also increase the allowed production before eco damage kicks in.

I almost never build factories simply due to the amount of eco damage it will cause if you are not very careful.
 
Herfelt, I have forests pretty much everywhere. Tree farms and hybrid farms and centauri preserves aswell. The problem is that I cannot build temple of planet, it's not an option even though I should be able to since I have the technology and have centauri preserves everywhere. It's a bug. And the double production does make a difference, when I'm not building satellites there is no eco damage except in a few bases with exceptional production.
 
You guys know about the Clean Mineral Limit?

It's the number of minerals a base can produce before it starts hitting eco-damage, even with all Forests tiles and Tree Farms/Hybrid Forests.

The Clean Mineral Limit will change over time, and if I recall the factors correctly, it goes up by one for every fungal pop, Centauri Preserve and Temple of Planet that is built on Planet - but, and it's a big bit, the Preserve and Temple bonuses only count after the a factions first fungal pop. Any built before that point don't matter, even after the first pop.

Thus, oddly enough, the best way to avoid eco-damage is to cause as much as you can as soon as you can, at least until you get one pop, then go nuts with the eco-protection stuff.

Vel's SMAC/X guide covers all this more authoritatively by the way.
 
@stoferb - If you haven't already done so, you should download and install the patches mentioned in my prior post. It's highly likely that doing so will allow you to build Temples of Planet. Lots of other bugs also are fixed.

@History_Buff - You probably already know this, but I wanted to mention that Tree Farms and Hybrid Forests also raise the clean mineral limit, when built after the first >pop<.

I think stoferb is correct that all minerals produced by bases when building satellites (before or after constructing the Space Elevator) count towards eco-damage. However, IIRC minerals from the Nessus Mining Station satellites don't cause eco-damage.
 
@Petek - I did install the update, when I installed the other thing the game wouldn't run so I had to re-install the game and then the update. We shall see if it's enough. I'm playing a new game on one of your huge maps, with slow tech on so it goes very slowly, I won't get secret's of alpha centauri anytime soon. I'm in the middle of my first pop-boom and techs are finally starting to come in a reasonable rate. I just got access to punishment spheres and am able to build them...still.

@History_Buff - I've noticed that building a few tree farms seemed to lift the cap for eco-damage even in bases that doesn't have them, but I didn't know the exact mechanism or if it maybe was some kind of bug. Thank you for making it clear.
 
Um, don't you need the Voice of Planet to build Temples of Planet?

...and indeed, the best way to deal with ecodamage is to jack up that clean mineral limit rather than to build Preserves. That way, Free Market doesn't hurt either. (It can be a little difficult to get it high enough if you have two factories AND sats, though.)

I'm confused. You mean you can scrap the fascilities and build them once again and the limit for ecodamage will increase?

If you build 32 bases, and build all three eco-facilities in each one (not counting Temple of Planet because if the Voice has been built the game's almost over) then you've got a clean mineral limit of 113. It takes a fair bit of work to get your production up to that level unless you're going OCP.

Based on experience, I think Nessus Mining Station minerals do count against the limit. But I'm not overly confident there, you'd have to experiment to be sure.

Did some research to refresh my memory. Turns out that the minerals strictly from the Nessus Mining Stations don't count against the clean mineral limit. However, increased minerals from Stations due to mineral-increasing facilities (such as Genejack Factories) or secret projects (The Bulk Matter Transmitter) do so count. That could make it appear that the Stations are causing increased eco-damage.
 
Ah, yeah, that makes sense. I had a hunch that was it, but I was in no way confident enough to say so authoritatively.
