You can do that with L or R button (cant remember) on the build menu. Other buys stuff with faith, other with gold.
I think you need room for the new unit also. So move the possible other units away from city center or encampment first, I think the button prompt shows as grayed out otherwise.
Make sure you have room in the city you're about to build the new unit (you can only have 1 civ and 1 military unit there at one time), as well as enough gold.
Ensure that the queue option is not ticked.
Highlight the appropriate unit (or building).
Press "L" ("R" if you're using faith to build an appropriate unit).
Your new unit will appear and can be used the following turn.
I've not played around with it much, but if the queue box is ticked, you can't just use L to buy with gold. I haven't played around with it much, but I didn't find a way to use gold to purchase with the queue function ticked.
When you have enough gold, in the unit section of the city production screen, the price should show up and it'll need you to press the R button to purchase. If it still doesn't show up, move any units from the city or the encampment. Units should be purchase-able by then.
