Whenever I try to make an account, after putting in my email, desired username, password, and repeated password, it will say "login attempt failed" But im not trying to log in! Is there any way that anyone knows how to avoid/get past this. I have the latest patch

Happens to me as well :( pre-patch as well as post patch

You have to create the account on the gamespy site (it's written on the bottom of the window in game). Don't forget to verify the account.

Same problem. Only not only can I not join the gamespy lobby (I have externally set up a verified account) I also seem to be unable to get any direct IP connections going.

I have seen some discussions on port activation etc, but that really goes over my head, I suspect its my connection settings, my ISP etc, but dont know where to start.

I have tried without ZA or any other firewalls installed. My connection is an odd one. Im using a Nokia 6680 as a modem with HSDC wireless web, it connects nicely at 460k or so and is fine for browsing. My IP addy also changes everytime I connect and no-one can ping me.

Any ideas gentlemen?

Has anyone actually been successful in logging on?

If so, what did you type into the "username" part? i know it sounds stupid, but im used to typing in the e-mail of the account to log on.

Strange, Dawn of War uses the same system and i can log onto that perfectly. I use the same account details for Civ 4 and it fails....

Ideas?

my account is verified and I'm told no such user.I d/l the latest gamespy and it does not see the game even after being told exactly were the exe is.(conquests and PTW show up).

edit :according to civ4players you need to install xfire(haven't tried it yet)

I also can't get an account to work :(

I first tried creating one from the game, but it just sat there doing nothing and eventually I thought it was dead-locked and rebooted. Then I tried going to the webpage directly (gamespyid). I entered my information and clicked finish, and it looked like my account was created. However I was not concentrated and somehow thought it failed, so I tried again, but with a different name this time (same email address!).

Then I realized that my first account had been created successfully with the name I wanted, but had not been verified. So I tried that, but the verification failed! It said I should double check if it really had sent the mail to the right address (funny, how else could I have clicked the activation link hm?).

Anyway, I have tried from different operating systems to verify my account, but it doesn't work in either case (tried with Windows XP and with Linux). So I don't think its a firewall problem, but rather that I created two accounts there with the same email address.

If anyone has an idea how I can solve this problem, I would appreciate it.

Same here.First I forwarded the ports to the machine in wuestion. Then I went so far as to put my system in the DMZ and turn off the windows firewall and try to connect using my verified account and get the same error.
If I try to make a new one it says cant connect to server and then login failed from there on out.

Gamers:

It is most interesting that nobody who can actually play via MP is posting to help us out. Maybe they are too busy playing to assist us poor souls. I too made an account, but that info still does not work from the MP within the game. My desire to crush other people has been on hold now since the release. How much longer we will have to wait is unknown. :( What a travesty! :crazyeye:

Someone please help.

Sincerely,

Darth Tater

Im downloading a protocol analyzer here at home to see if I can sniff out the problem.

well...I cant figure it out. I see action between 29900 and 4957 but thats a playstation 2 port. The game uses port 2056 and if I forward that still no love. hmmmI see 4955...no idea what thats for...sigh

Hope this helps a bit.

I decided yesterday to try a multiplayer game and tried to sign in, but failed with invalid name and the like.

Ive had a gamespy account for 6years so was slightly baffled by this, so for some bizzare reason I went to create a new account within Civ4 multiplayer game. It gives 4 options, username, email and password x2, I used the user name from my gamespy account, same email address that my gamespy account is on and password to. Once I had entered that it connected me into the Civ4 multiplayer lobby and now have no probs signing in each time.

I think the answer is the first time you want to play Civ4 online you need to create an account that has the same details as your gamespy account.

Hope that helps guys!!

I played multiplayer. It doesn't work with my real gamespy account, that's true.

All I did was create an account inside CIV4 with a username that was obviously non-existant (with a lot of numbers) and I used a non-existant e-mail. Worked from the first time. So I play with a new account (with a stupid name) wich has a fake e-mail adres. Try it.

Also make sure you allow the game access to internet with your firewall, obviously.

Hmm..when I tried to make an account. (Ill try again this weekend) I used my current validated name. When it went to get created it said login failed and from there on out it said can't connect. I went to gamespyid and for my e-mai laddress had my account and myaccount with a -tk after it. neither worked

Gamers:

Well this officially bites!!! No wonder I turned to the dark side. It takes approximately 1 second, after trying to log in through Civ IV, for the message to appear stating I cannot connect. Again, this bites!!

I finally have connected.
Like previous posters have suggested you must create a new account. But un-like previous posters that advice didn't work for me at first. It falied to connect all the time.
Because of other issues I had to re-install W XP.I installed the game under sp1(I would not let me check the windows exception option when I installed the game)so I un-installed the game and installed sp2 for windowsXP.The installation allowed me to check the exception box.It works great(patched 109).
So in conclusion you must create a NEW account, and Civ 4 MUST be on the Windows Firewall exception list, turning of firewalls does nothing. It may not work at all under sp1.
To check to see if you are on Exception list.Control Panel/Windows Firewall/Exceptions.
You can add the program here also by browsing for exe and adding to list.

Now If someone can solve the joining games already in progress from quitters. It's not fun playing someone else's civ even if they are in first place.
