....Are there any really good mods to spice this thing up? I'm using one called Civ Nights (?) right now. Been playing Civ since Civ I. I just can't seem to get into this one the way I did with the others. It looks good. There's alot of good ideas....I can't put my finger on it. Somethings missing.

Thalassicus's (sp?) Vanilla Enhanced Mod may help, but I'm not sure what you mean by 'spice things up.' Like change the game completely? Or just fix some of the broken pieces?

FWIW, you're not alone. Look at it this way, when the game came out last Sept, it was far worse and I couldn't stay interested at all - ended up giving up on the game in November and hadn't played at all til about a month ago. It's better now, and I've been enjoying the games I've played recently (mostly co-op with friends, so that helps) but I know what you mean. Back around release, a lot of us felt like Civ5 lost the 'epic' feel of earlier incarnations, no sense of 'building an empire to stand the test of time,' so to speak.

I think it's improved quite a bit through patches, but that's only relative to the state it was in last Sept.

Thanks. I'll look that one up. Also having a hard time getting the hang of the 'fewer cities' thing. I miss empire building. A friend of mine told me to approch this as a completely different game. Not to think of it as a Civ game :mischief: What's the gorram point?! I wanted a new Civ game:lol:

Heh, it's like deja vu all over again reading your posts... you're saying a lot of the same things many of us did back last winter. It's frustrating at first, no question. Back then it was worse, too - it was a game of "don'ts." Don't build too many cities, don't build lots of buildings, don't build a big military, don't build roads, etc. I get what Firaxis was trying to aim for, but the impression at the time was that they somehow forgot to make it fun to not do all these things we were used to doing in Civ.

And yeah, there was that whole "new direction" thing too. That Civ5 is a "fresh approach" to Civ. I railed against it at the time, and I still think it was a crap decision for a sequel to the Civilization franchise, but I guess I've accepted it by now - clearly the idea was not to make a sequel to Civ4, but to reboot the entire franchise and start over. I can understand the reasons for doing so - it's certainly more cost-effective to make this game instead of making a Civ Rev 2 AND a full-blown Civ 5 - and this game will certainly be more accessible to new players than Civ 4 was. And I'm always glad to hear new people are starting to play Civ, so that's a bit of a silver lining.

Anyway, I don't want to re-open old wounds around here (there were a lot of flame wars due to how divided the CFC community was over Civ5) and at this point it's better to focus on solutions to address problems rather than just complaining about the problems, so hopefully others who use more mods will be able to help you find ways to tweak the game and make it more enjoyable. Good luck. :)

75 cities are not enough?

There are quite a few good mods. NiGHTS changes the underlying game pretty substantially, as I'm sure you've noticed. Thalassicus' VEM mod overhauls a lot of the existing game's policies and balance to make it much smoother; it's the gold standard for balance mods, and every major change you've seen in the vanilla game in the past year was, well, "inspired" by parts of his mod. My own mods add blocks of content (future-era stuff for the Alpha Centauri mod, mythological stuff for the Age of Mythology mod I'm still working on). The community Call To Power mod adds a lot of content throughout the existing game, and overhauls quite a bit of the existing stuff. Then there's Hulfgar's modpack, the City-State Diplomacy mod, UI-only stuff like InfoAddict... lots of good mods to choose from.

Forget the in-game Mod Browser, though; most of the stuff on there has long since been abandoned by the creators, and won't work with the current game version. Go over into the Creation and Customization forum on this site, it's where all of the modding's really being done; read through the Modpacks, Mod Components, and Projects forums and see what sounds interesting (and what's been kept up-to-date).
