I have the original discs for Civ4 vanilla, and downloaded BTS (3.17) from Gametap.
(Actually, the whole story is more complicated. I had Warlords and Colonization from Steam, as well. As part of this whole very painful process, I've uninstalled everything Civ-related, rebooted, and reinstalled only the original from disk and BTS.)
If I try to download the patch using the in-game "Check for updates", it finds and downloads the patch, says it needs to quite the game to apply the patch and restart. The game quits, and nothing else happens. If I start the game again, it's still 3.17, still finds and downloads the patch, etc.
I've also downloaded the patch from here, Filefront, and the Firaxis site. When I run these from outside the game (using admin privileges), something different happens: It acts as though I'm installing BTS for the first time. It brings up an InstallShield wizard, asks me to agree to the EULA, etc. When I reach the final step and click "Install", the program freezes.
Edit: Solved. I contacted Gametap tech support who pointed me to http://www.gamesplanet.com/UK/pc-games/patch-Civilization-4-Beyond-the-Sword-841.html, which worked without a hitch. (Of course, why didn't I think to go looking at the patches in the European counterpart of the business I bought it from?)
Anyway, thought it might help other people struggling with the Gametap version to know about the European patch source.
I've seen several places suggesting that I download the patch from the vendor I got the game from, but Gametap doesn't seem to have it. I did download the patch file from another digital distributor (D2D), but it acts the same as the other installers I downloaded.
I'm running Vista but I've been using admin privileges on the installer.
