Hi, I'm trying to edit an existing mod (made by someone else, downloaded by me), in specific, its BLP files. In order to do that, I'm trying to unpack them with the Asset Editor in ModBuddy. Sadly, whenever I even try to launch the Asset Editor, I get this:

Please help. What should I do? And/or is there any other way to edit those BLP files? I literally just want to edit leader screens and icons in an existing mod and overwrite it.

You can't edit BLP (Binary Library Package) files directly - they are cooked based on XLP (XML Library Package) defintions. There is no way of unpacking an existing BLP. See here for more.

You'll also need to install the SDK Assets as well the SDK and make sure you paths are correct in ModBuddy look under Tools--->Options--->Civilization VI--->General.

In this case... what would be the best way to edit an existing mod's icons/leader screens? Is it at all doable? ...

Without the original Modbuddy project there's not much you can do unless the modder has included the Textures directory within the mod.

They didn't... That's terrible. I remember editing mods in Civ5 was so easy and straightforward. Now you are basically at the modder's mercy.
If anyone has some ideas as to what I could do please let me know.

Well it was Firaxis' decision to have art cooked irreversibly into *.blp files. I think the primary reason for this was to protect DLC assets as DLCs and Expansions use the same framework as mods. Some aspects of graphics modding are much nicer in Civ VI overall, but if you want to modify someone else's work you kind of need their Modbuddy project really.

So there is no way to get fgx files for the DLCs?

No. We only have the Expansion assets for Rise & Fall and Gathering Storm in the SDK Assets pantry.
