Can't open .exe files!

I'm trying to fix up an oldish laptop for a friend and have noticed that I can't run most programs or run .exe files. Not sure what to do... any ideas?

Chances are the files are gone/corrupt.

What happens when you try to run them? Does it give an error or just not do anything?

Also, you need to tell us what OS it is. Chances are, the files have gone corrupt because otherwise Windows would not be running ( I assume its a version of Windows because you're trying to run .exe's).

Nah, I know that's not it.

What happens when you try to run them? Does it give an error or just not do anything?

It just doesn't do anything, but occasionally it asks me what program to use to run the .exe; I select the correct program and then it does nothing.

Im interested, in the registry ( start>run>regedit) under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/classes/.exe what does it have for the content type?

Also, what program are you telling it to run the .exe with?

.exe doesn't run with another program, since it is a program. If no .exe is running i would think that a Windows file is corrupt.

Remove the file type association you've created for .exe files.
