Can't start the game

I've read through a few threads on here and a lot of people seemed to have the same problem but the solution isn't clear.

Problem:

I start up civ4 v1.52 get to the "done" part of it loading up (with small background). Cursor changes to the civ4 cursor and the music starts but no video. Some mentioned I have to unpack files but it's not clear which files and where....

Laptop:

1.8Ghz, Pentium 4
ATI Radeon 7500, Updated Driver

Help please!

You will have problems with that graphics setup. Its the lowest possible on the hardware spec list, and in my view untenable for the game - it does not have the graphics processing power needed.

You will need to get a mid range graphics card to run it properly. You can of course go through the posts on maximising the graphics and main system RAM load, they will all help, and you might get to the point where you can play Tiny / Small worlds - maybe even standard worlds, but in the latter case you will probably go bang in the late game as it will have problems coping with the amount of graphics work needed at the late game.

With the 7500 it will be particularly important to make sure you minimise background applications and services, get your pagefile to 2000mb and get your graphics & sound drivers updated to the correct driver. Lots of posts showing you how.

Zy

I have the same prob too... but my specs are Pentium4 2.6GHz 512MB ram and RADEON 9200

Lots of Radeon 9200s have surfaced since Patch V1.52 - the latter put more work onto video cards, any that were on the edge, and the 9200s are, fell over.

Have a look at this thread, you need to try and reduce the load on the cpu and graphics card
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=155217

But before doing any drastic changes, post you dxdiag and we can check it for you

Zy,

A number of people in this forum seem to be running the game with the RADEON 7500 without the error above. I have tried updating to the new patch but get the same error. I will post a dxdiag later on this weekend but i've already heard of people unpacking art files that solve the problem. I just don't know how to!

Your Grahics are 32Mb - thats below spec. You need at least 64Mb on a Video card, preferably 128 - ie Hardware T&L support. The 7500 is right on the edge of run/not run with Civ IV, it will not take much to push it over. Your additional problem is that you have the Mobility varient - its integrated into the motherboard, and shares main system RAM for its needs above 32Mb. Mobility Radeons also needs the suppoort of the cpu to allow it to work reducing capacity for anything else, it cant off load to a separate system ie a video card.

The next Civ Patch looks likely within 2 weeks given no hiccups in final testing, that Patch includes more memory use reduction, more code optimising and the usual raft of fixes. They may help you, so avoid the rush to buy more RAM until you can evaluate the effect of the next Patch. However that notebook came out late 2001/early 2002, and I would question the value of additional RAM, even if you can fit it.

Regarding other 7500s, yes some are working, most of those are separate graphics cards not the Mobility varient, and most that run will have the min spec dedicated 64Mb memory on a video card. Even those will discover more problems as they get into the larger / huge maps and late games. It will be very important to lower testures, resolution, use of AA etc - anything that reduces load on the cpu (and if they have one - video card)

Wait for the next Patch, have a look then, reduce the load on video processing as much as you can, reduce background aplications running at startup. There's a list at
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?p=3607616#post3607616
Thats a lot of work, and I doubt it will produce a significant increase in performance for you - only you can make the choice whether its worth it to you (which if no dosh available, clearly anything is worth it - but keep expectations on the level, its a below spec laptop)

Bottom line, I would anticipate you coming to the conclusion its a new hardware buy. If it was me, and I had the dosh, I would upgrade the machine - paying careful attention to the needs of 3D processing and avoiding the Sales blurb re "stunning 3D graphics ...". Check what you buy against reputable reviews, be careful of Urban myths founded in the 2D world. The Civ Series is a full blown 3D game now, and it needs careful attention to detail re graphics hardware to cope with the processing needs

Zy,

Thanks for the reply. Very helpful.

If the patch doesn't work me I intend to look at a previous version of the game (as I have never played civilization before). Which version would you recommend for a newbie?

Thanks,

Mike

Hello,

I am having the exact same problem as GeordieMike. However, Civ 4 used to run fine for me, with no problems whatsoever except for the "failed to intilize renderer" one thats common with ATI cards and was fixed in the latest patch. This problem with me only getting a black screen with sound has only started occuring since I have switched to Windows XP 64-bit. Does anybody here have any ideas of how to fix this issue? I'm running an ATI x800 XL graphics card with the latest Catalyst drivers. As well, when I Alt-Tab to minimize the program, right before the program minimizes I get a brief flash of the actual menu screen, which seems odd.

Thank you in advance.

i also have this issue, but i am way above in the system requirements..

here my dxdiag

Main problem I see here most of y'all are using Pentium processors. Im sorry if I sound biased being an AMD guy for so long already. I agree if you do decide to run the game with a Pentium better get a mid to high range video card. The problem I see with intel is they went more on speed rather than features on their processors. AMD has direct 3d on the proc with that low to mid on this game well it does have problems but it does run.. just my penny's worth
