Capitalization

Welcome to CFC, eyox1!:D

Capitalization means that all excess shields in your city are converted to gold. Also, you will not produce anything in that city (other than gold). Capitalization is never "built" or "completed".

There are two basic capilization strategies:

First, to supplement the income generated by your taxes. This will give you extra cash to rush-complete jobs or to buy enemy units/cities. :cooool:

Second, when you are later into the game and you have every city improvement built in a city, you can capitalize and collect the gold every turn. When you have enough cities doing this, you can lower your tax rate, and increase your science or luxuries! :king:

I have another use for capitalization (but not so good as the others) : when I'm about to complete the Manhattan Project but don't want the AI to have the possibility to use nukes, I change from wonder to capitalization, until the AI is one turn from finishing it.
This gives more time to build SDI improvements...

Sometimes also, I have two or more wonders pending, but all are already built and the new ones are not available yet. So, no to lose the shields, I capitalize until I can change back to wonder construction.

Off the original topic, but it is not necessary, Titi, to change wonder production to capitalization at all. If you are building a wonder that has already been built, you can keep producing it. :cooool: When you get the message "[cityname] is building [wonder], but it already has been built", simply hit 'continue' and the wonder production will keep accumulating shields.

A pain in its repetition :mutant: , but very worthwile! :goodjob:

Continuing off topic, you have to judge whether it is worth it to continue building the wonder in question in order to change for another. I once had one of my cities building the Hanging Gardens for ages while I got around to researching Monotheism and built Mike's in one turn but unfortunately by the time I finished it I had about 500 shields amassed and wished that I hadn't wasted so many. You have to choose when it is best to break off and waste a few shields by building something else and when you should press on and complete another wonder instead.

I agree, but the maximum is 600 shields. So when the total amounts to 600 - one turn production, I change to capitalization until there's a new wonder.

Regarding the "loss of shields" when transforming production into capitalization, I have to say that I never noticed that. When I revert back to production, the previous number of shields reappears.

I think Titi's right:)

When you build something and change to capitalization, the shields you allready produced are still there, but all new shields are turned into gold. That's a good way if you, as Titi mentioned, don't want to build the wonder yet and don't want to overbuild and have no other wonder to switch to.

If this is the case then it could save a lot of trouble in late game, as a few times I have been beaten to completeion by an AI then overproduced waiting for the next wonder to come available.

Regarding capitalization changes: You will lose 75% of your shields by switching from making a unit (or improvement), to Capitalization, and back to a unit on a later turn. Switches among Capitalization, SS parts, and Wonders incur no shield penalty.

About the loss of shields (unit-improvement-Cap/Won/SS): you lose 50% when you first switch to Capitalization (e.g., if you had 40 shields towards a Freight, then now you have 20 shields "stored" in capitalization that you can't see). On a later turn, if you switch from Capitalization back to say, a freight, you will lose 50% again (e.g., you have 10 shields in your produciton box now). Swithc to a Wonder or SS part and you will have 20 shields, not 10 :).

But you will always retain at least one shield, no matter how many times you switch...
