Capturing cities with an Engineer?!

I find this weird. I was playing a game and was getting bored, so I started to set all my engineers to auto (I have 41 of them, and I am too lazy to set them all to a task). I happened to set this one engineer, that was by an enemy city that I had attacked the last round and killed off its last defender, and it took over an enemy city while on its way to irragate! Has anyone else had this happen? Is this a well known fact that I missed?

I thought the computer does not even allow you to use a settler/engineer to attack! No I have never seen it happen. I rarely use the "automate setter" command. Only used it once when I had 279 cities.

Indeed so, an engineer can capture an undefended city, I have done so many times. I also believe, but have not tested, that any ground unit (not just a marine) may capture an undefended city directly from a ship.

Yes lefty, it is true. You can take an undefended city with any fighting unit from a boat. Have done it many times, pound a coastal city with my ships,

then empty a transporter into it.

This actually makes perfect sense. An undefended city has nothing with which to challenge any unit. To the Engineers and non-Marines on ships, it's not a fight ... just another square to land on.

I just never thought about it that way until you brought it up, PH!

If the question is can a partisan take a city : yes it can and it is a regular combat unit and can fight. It is sort of a low rent aline unit.

If the question is what happens when you take a city with a engineer from a civ with the partisan warfare tech, the host of partisans will appear as normally around the in the captured city's radius.

If its an AI city you took the partisan are all fortified for a few turns instead of attacking.

Well, I didn't bring up the boat landing, that was Lefty Scaevola. I brought up my Engineer taking over a city while already on the land. You can't normally take over a city with a unit that has an attack of zero.
These are the ways that you can take over a city with zero attack strenght units:
1)Automate an Engineer
2)Automate a Settler? Don't know for sure, but if it works for the Engineer..
3)Unload off a ship: Any 0 attack unit can take over city.

These haven't been confirmed by me, except the Engineer one, I saw that. If there are anymore ways to take over a city in a way that isn't supposed to happen, like flying a bomber of a carrier, post it please.

Settlers are wonderful, not only can you take unoccupied cities but you can make them as NON?

Ask questions later on the main site for NON?

I've allways been able to take empty enemy cities with settlers, diplomats and units like that on civ 1 and civ 2.

Strangly though, you can't take empty cities with some ships full of military units, unless you move the units in one at a time which takes up movement points

i haver the orig civ2, i can take over citys with anything except diplos/spys/freig/caravans boats planes, i think thats tehm all

if you read my topic in the stories and tales you will see how i won a game, by conquest, with a settler
