just a little thing really that ships are destroyed when you take the city whereas they should be captured or at least a 50/50 chance of sabotaging them before the city falls.i just find it annoying that i always have a small navy mainly cos i cant be bothered to build ships :)

That'd be cool.

Another cool thing that's brought to mind would be the capability for renaissance-era ships (galleon, frigate, etc) to capture others... in the old days, ships were rarely sunk (because they were so expensive), but rather captured. There's already something similar in the 'enslave' feature of the Mesoamerica scenario.

As a matter of fact that shouldnt be too hard to mod in right now.

I agree. I thought the same thign every time I captured an enemy city with like 10 battleships. Perhaps there should be a 50% that the ship's captain manages to scuttle the ship and a 50% chance of capture. This should pobably apply to aircraft too. A 50% chance that the pilots fly them away to an enemy city and a 50% chance of capture, or something like this.

And because it took alot more effort to sink a ship than it did to capture one.

I want booty. Give me pirates, matey! And the ability to capture ships and loot their booty  Plus, I would like to see merchant ships as part of the trade route. These can be automatically travelling between ports and are actual units. But, when needed, the player can manually control them, or automate support ships to accompany them, or even pirate each others ships... This is an option that needs to be explored.... Please, Mr. Meier!

I like this idea

That is your fault, not the games.

;)

It would be great, before the Industrial Age, when they scuttled ships so the enemy couldn't use them.

never find the point of using ships.i can normally get to another island in one or two turns and then i only use transports (cos ships are so bad at bombarding) or planes can bomb the hell outta enemy ships.i just think it would be cool capturing them:)

Well, we're presuming that naval warfare will be more important (namely, the AI will be able to use it) in cIV.

Wooden ships where often captured (i read this but cant remember where) cuz they are so hard to sink. Wood floats and iron doesnt... (WOW im smart) , and unlike iron ships, wooden ships had to be almost-destroyed or burned in order to sink.

Id love to see captured ships more often. And the "escape from harbor" is also a good idea... , but what about giving the player a choice??

"Commander!! the city of _______ has been captured by the evil Firaxians!! Should our ships anchored in the harbor try to escape or should we scuttle the fleet??"

if you scuttle them, about 1/3 of the ships should be salvaged or captured... if you try and escape, you can either lose them to the enemy or they might escape (w/damage). And the escape shouldnt be to another city, it should be just 2 or 3 squares from the captured city

factoring in the speed of the ship should also count. For example, subs and destroyers should escape about 60% of the time... crusiers and transports 50%... battleships and aircraft carriers much less, 30% sounds good.

any comments??

Are there records of captured ships being reused in either of the World Wars?

I found a record on ship capture from the American Civil War
Semmes, Raphael
When Alabama, his home state, seceded from the Union (January 1861), Semmes resigned his commission as commander, and with the outbreak of war in April he received a similar appointment in the Confederate Navy. After capturing 17 Union merchant ships while in command of the packet “Sumter,” he was assigned to command the “Alabama,” newly built in England. Between 1862 and 1864 he made a series of brilliant and successful cruises, capturing, sinking, or burning 82 Union ships valued at more than $6,000,000.

Found another record called the Pueblo Incident
capture of the USS “Pueblo,” a Navy intelligence ship, and its 83 crewmen by North Korean patrol boats off the coast of North Korea on Jan. 23, 1968.

wasnt that sub that held the enigma machine captured by the british reused to attack the bismark or did i completely make that story up?

anyway superpelon i like all the stuff about percentage for each ship escaping but i think you should either get the choice of blowing all the ships or try to run away which always has the chance of the enemy capturing it or is that basically what u meant?good ideas anyhow

nice :) now that would be good for the new game. lets hope the makers actually read the suggestions from the people in here.
