CARAVAN disappeared!?

Question... I was trading (through a caravan) with Venice. However, I got the warmonger itch, and went to war with Venice. I believe the caravan was in their territory, and all of a sudden, disappeared from the map!

Hence... when you declare war with someone you're trading with, does your unit (the one trading with the new enemy civ) disappear? Or does it only disappear if in their territory?

Finally, how do you attack a trade unit or trade route? I haven't figured out how.

If you declare war on the Civ in which its the destination of the trade units, your Caravans and Cargo ships will be destroyed.
If you declare war on the Civ in which your Caravans and Cargo ship are passing through its territory, the Civ will plunder your routes with extreme prejudice.

Awesome! Good to know. Does this mean the enemy will NEVER go to war with you as long as you share a trade route with them?

Also, I noticed that the caravan graphic is purely aesthetic, since you get the bonuses as soon the trade route is made. There is no added benefit when the caravan reaches the target city or your home city, correct?

No - I lost a lot of caravans that way. Not sure if they take account of whether they have caravans still trading with you, though.

I thought I noticed that when I first opened my first trade route with Venice, the caravan had to reach the city first, and the bonus was then immediate for subsequent trade routes, but I may be wrong.

I can confirm the AI doesn't mind going to war with you while a trade route is active. Maria backstabbed me when my military was small and I lost the caravan that was indeed still active between us (Had just renewed it in fact)

Same here. Monty attacked me several turns after HE started a trade route with me!

From a RP perspective this is cool because I can see the poor, innocent Aztec merchants just trying to make money and being caught in-between.

From a tactical perspective, I don't see how Monty benefited from that behavior, but I don't know all the factors that were involved in the AI's decision, so who knows.
