Carthage 1.0

In Greek World I didn't alter XML titles, but just the inner content, and replaced names later, in the text XML.
So, England is renamed Greek City-States, and Victoria is renamed Perikles, but Perikles has Victoria's mindset.
That's something I didn't know. Technically I thought the mind sets were modified already and I borrowed the code from the Greek World module and simply redefined the new leader Hannibal. So, I think I'll go over them and experiment for a special personality for Hannibal.

Carthage has reached 1.3!

Now the War Elephants no longer require ivory -- and CivArmy's fantastic leaderhead has replaced the borrowed GreekWorld art!

Great work guys, keep it up!

Does anyone have any ideas for a second leader for Carthage?

Wonderful mod.

For a second leader, I'd suggest either Dido (Spiritual, Organised), Hanno the Great (Financial, Aggressive) or Hamilcar Barca (Aggressive, Expansive?).

Jecrell: I love this mod so much. It has inspired me to delve into a deep study of Carthage.

What I've learned so far:

  • Carthage was a Phoenican colony, and it long outlasted the motherland Phoenicia itself (present-day Lebenon) which got conquered by Nebuchenezzer of Babylon. Phoenicians were a Semetic people, like Hebrews and Arabs. One day I'm going to make a leaderhead that reflects a more Semetic appearance for Hannibal.
  • Carthaginians spoke Punic, which was similiar to Aramaic, and today Berber tribes still use Punic-ish languages.
  • Carthage was an oligarchical Republic, similar to Rome.
  • They worshipped Ba'al.
  • Hannibal (from Punic, literally means "Baal is merciful to me")
  • Priests were required to be clean shaven, but all other males generally had beards.
  • Carthaginians were the first to document sailing into the Atlantic, when Himilco the Navigator sailed from the Mediterranean Sea to reach the northwestern shores of Gaul. When Himilco published his account, he did everything to describe his voyage as one of hardship and trouble: it discouraged the Greeks from going west and interfering on his trade route, and had the additional benefit that his own exploits were more impressive. Himilco said he saw beasts and sea monsters beyond Gibraltar, and this account of monsters became one source of the legends discouraging sailing in the Atlantic that were held true by many until Christopher Columbus.
  • Carthaginian explorer Hanno the Navigator explored deep down the coast of Africa and was the first to document finding gorillas. He hung a tablet describing his journey in the Temple of Ba'al in Carthage.
  • Lots of people were sacrificed to Ba'al.
  • After Carthage was conquered by the Romans, it later became one of the first Roman provinces to see widespread conversion to Christianity. St. Augustine, who along with St. Paul, formed Christian doctrine as we know it, was a Carthaginian.
  • Hannibal's feat in crossing the Alps with war elephants passed into European legend: a 16th century fresco detail.
  • They're making a big Hollywood blockbuster due in 2006 called HANNIBAL directed by and starring Vin Diesel as Hannibal.

I've just started a book called Carthage and the Carthaginians. More later.

Could you make a version without an installer? I'm running Linux mainly and your installer doesn't work in Cedega. It's rather annoying to have to use my Windows box to extract this mod.

Hamilcar or Hasdrubal.
Family of Hannibal and both played a major role in Carthaginian history too.
If I am not mistaken it was Hamilcar who conquered Spain for Carthage. I don't know exactly, it could have been Hasdrubal. I am not at home so I can't look it up. Read a book on Carthage years ago.

Did you know that Hannibal was a mercenary for years after he lost the war against Rome? He served in Syria and a kingdom in modern day Turkey. He also had very clever strategies on naval warfare. Outnumbered by an enemy fleet he let his men gather poisonous snakes and put them in pottery. Those he catapulted to the enemy ships and the enemy soldiers and sailors en masse jumped overboard or got bitten. Probably largely exaggerated, but still a nice legend! :)

I want to thank you Jercell. Carthage was always one of my favorite civs and it is great to be the leader of it once again.

Though does anyone know a way to have a mod load up on startup without having to load it once the game starts?

Try making a shortcut path something like this...
"D:\Games\Game Files\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Civilization4.exe" mod= Jecrell [Carthage]

And the mod should load automatically when you use that shortcut. Personally, I prefer the shortcut method rather than editing the _Civ4Config.ini file, which can be found the Civilization IV main directory. If you edit that with notepad, you can set your default mod in there.

i have to thank you too, nice work, Carthage is BEST civilization ever! Carthage WILL rise again! (hope so..) :D

hey is the leaderhead animated?? on some of the posts they say if the leaderheads are animated or not so im just wondering...

Well, the only animated leaderheads that can be done are reskins of Firaxis' default leaderheads (Napoleon, Gandhi, Mao, ect). That is, until tools are released that allow us to use animated leaderheads, in which case, CivArmy has everything set up already (the animations are already ready -- just waiting to be implemented -- I believe).

So, when the tools become available, everything by CivArmy will become animated shortly following that date. :)

Don't know if you could do it, since you are using a previous picture, but Hannibal had a patch over one eye, he lost it in the swamps when invading rome, and also, though there is some argument over this, he kept himself clean shaven so that he would be easy to distinguish on a battle field.

One thing you may want to consider doing with the elephants, since it was a key to Hannibals success in war, would be to give them some kind of defensive advantage or something, as Hannibal always chose the ground for his battles, which is a key to his successes. Would also differentiate them more from other elephant/calvary type units.

As for alternative leaders, Hannibal's father or brother would be keys. His father I believe conquered Spain and his brother was the one that he trusted to keep his enemies in Carthage from betraying him while he was at war.

Two suggestions:
1) Hannibal was blind in one eye. It would be awesome to show that in the LH.
2) Hannibal was not a big fan of the Carthage Senate, so i'd suggest switching his preferred civic to something other than representation (maybe give that to a second Carthaginian leader)
